This was an odd coming-of-age story about a 6th-grade girl trying to figure life out in her new town. There are two main growing pains that the movie focuses on. The first is womanhood. Margaret is desperate to have her first period and as the group mantra goes "We must, we must, we must increase our bust." The other big focus is her trying to figure out religion. Her Jewish dad and Christian mom never pushed religion because it was the reason her grandparents disowned her mom. She samples religion and feels so lost. Nothing felt right to her and she starts to feel like religion is a waste. This movie is quite awkward for a gentleman like me to watch alone for the sake of a review. This is very much a mother-daughter movie date kind of film. It had many funny moments, and I enjoyed the themes throughout the movie. I am curious enough to read the book and see how it compares. You can decide for yourself based on the plot and themes if this movie is for you. This has a specific audience that can be appreciated by anyone but loved more by those who have experienced teenage girl life.
