- The Expendables 4 (Released 9/22/23)
Such a hollow shell of what it was supposed to be. The action is great as always but there are two things I didn’t like. The CGI felt god-awful compared to the previous films. With the previous films, they celebrated the action genre and paid homage to the classics. This felt like the budget-constrained them to 2 big stars, Megan Fox, and action guys with nothing better going on. They couldn’t even get Antonio Banderas back! I honestly was going to rate the story lower but there is a twist at the end that was equal part brilliant and part stupid. If your testosterone has gotten too low since Fast X, give it a watch. Just don’t expect the greatest movie ever. - My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 (Released 9/8/23)
This movie is as predictable as they come and seemed like the post-covid trend of a rom-com sequel going to exotic European countries. The family seems smaller this time around so it doesn’t have as many scenes where everyone is loud and stressful. It was an OK experience. Its short runtime worked in its favor. It isn’t a sequel that was needed, but fans of the franchise will more than welcome it. - My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 (2016)
While a little better than the original, it is still trying to coast on the same unfunny concept of Greeks being loud and insufferable. Loud does not equal funny. The B-plot of Paris going to college seemed real and relatable because all parents want their kids to go to college close to home rather than out of state. The main plot of the grandparents remarrying because of a hiccup that made their original marriage incomplete is dumb. I’m pretty sure that legally they would still be considered married at some point after 50 years. Paris is the best character and I feel so bad for her having to not only suffer the normal teenager struggles with her parents but the rest of the family is just horrible and annoying. There is a semblance of a fun rom-com but I do not like the movie or the concept. Watch The Proposal instead. Ryan Reynolds and Sandra Bullock are comedy gold. - My Big Fat Greek Wedding (2002)
This movie was trying its damndest to trigger my fight or flight. Nothing freaks me out more than a bunch of loud people in a house. Apparently, that is how Greeks act and I don’t like it. On a serious note, this movie isn’t really for me. I like a bit more fun and adventure in my rom-coms. This just leaned into a Greek family leaning too hard into tradition and it makes up most of the conflict. It has the message of trying to be your own person despite your parents' expectations and trying to make them happy. They put up with everything for love and that can be worth it. I’m sure someone would enjoy this, but it is too stressful for me to watch. - Black Adam (2022)
This movie isn’t terrible, but it was a bit lackluster in my opinion. Visually, there were a lot of amazing moments, while other moments look like the CG was made 15 years ago. The story is fine and the characters are decent. The Justice Society was actually a fun group of characters. There were a couple of humorous moments that made me laugh. The problem with the movie overall is it felt very blah, and felt like it was playing superhero movie bingo. It even had the classic giant beam in the sky that everyone loves in their movies. All that being said, this was also the movie that made me strongly dislike the Rock. I’m not saying the Rock is a bad person. The press around him and his ego, both before and after this film came out, was just infuriating. He plays the same character in every movie: The masculine guy with quippy one-liners that gets the badass moments sprinkled in all of his fights. He leans so heavily on his charisma, that he doesn’t know how to be him without it. Everything is all about drive and when he fails, he can’t accept it. There were so many reports about him trying to make Black Adam look like more of a success than it was. There were reports saying he essentially was too good for Shazam! and only wanted to play with the big boys like Superman. The Rock is faltering in my opinion. He will always be a go-to action guy, but at this point, I’ll only watch his movies based on the story rather than just his name alone. Okay, I think I’ve ranted enough about the Rock. All in all, this is a fine action movie, but besides a few get visual shots, it doesn’t do anything special. It’s average fair in the superhero genre. - Doctor Strange (2016)
There are a handful of MCU movies that felt like the Iron Man 1 formula and this was the worst offender. I will say visually this movie did a lot of cool things. This also marked the first explanation of magic in the MCU as well as multiverses. This movie set up an interesting world and Doctor Strange is up there with Tony in a lot of aspects. I like what they did but story-wise was not wowed. Visually, I was stunned. - A Haunting in Venice (Released 9/15/23)
They forgot to market this as a Hercule Poirot film. The marketing leaned so heavily into the horror side of it that you would easily forget that it is a mystery film. Hercule Poirot and Benoit Blanc are both great detectives and their films are made with great love and attention to detail. I somehow managed to figure it out at the seance which is the first time everyone is together. It has you guessing throughout and has plenty of jumpscares. I also laughed way too hard from a line that came from a cockatoo. Seeing the mystery unravel and Hercule figuring out how to prove it is not supernatural is fantastic. It used the horror element to its advantage but it was still a proper mystery at the end of the day. - The Nun II (Released 9/8/23)
The main Conjuring movies are the best part of the franchise but the Nun is the second best in the universe. It brings back several characters from the last movie. There are plenty of tense and scary moments. The payoff for the sequel tease in the first film was well done. I enjoyed everything about this movie. The characters are great and the story is superb. It never feels bogged down. The scares are immaculate. Definitely go see this movie ASAP. - Bottoms (released 8/25/23)
This is a raunchy comedy disguised as a genuine coming-of-age film. At first, I wasn’t into the movie because I’m getting older, and high school-level swearing and raunchiness just feel unnecessary. But as the movie progressed I was starting to see the underlying themes and I even started to laugh. It was nonsensical at times but it shows high school struggles. Not just with relationships but existing in high school. It had real drama and emotion. You eventually start rooting and caring for these weird ass characters. This will be a good watch on streaming. - The Equalizer 2 (2018)
This was definitely an improvement over the first one. It felt more like a personal story. Even the villain had a personal connection so there was a little bit of a chess match going on. The action also improved slightly this time around. Pedro Pascal is always a treat in any movie that he is in. There is still a lot of identity that this movie needs to find. I keep comparing moments to other action movies rather than it being its own thing. It’s a fun enough action movie. Still not a must-see, but a step in the right direction. - The Equalizer (2014)
This felt like a mix of several different action movies, all in one flick. The precision of John Wick, the smarts of Sherlock Holmes, a finale like Die Hard, mixed with everything in between. Denzel and Chloe Grace Moretz were the only interesting characters in this thing but it's played so serious and dramatic it comes off almost bland anyway. I wish it had more of an identity rather than a multi-inspired film. It also dragged quite a bit throughout the movie. It’s an okay movie, but it is more of a watch it when you catch it kind of movie. You don’t need to go out of your way to see this. It plays it safe for a basic R-rated action movie. Story - 16% Characters - 15% Pacing - 14% Spectacle - 17% Entertainment - 16% Total score: 78% Grade scale: 90%-100% = must watch 80%-89% = solid, but could be better 70%-79% = Not terrible, watch if the characters or story interests you 60%-69% = only watch for completionist reasons 0%-59% = just skip it, I find the positives and they don't exist here
- The Batman (2022)
He is darkness. He is the night. He is… vengeance. The first live-action Batman movie to show him being the world’s greatest detective. Granted, the Bruce Wayne side left a bit to be desired since he had the same brooding look as his vigilante counterpart. The action was perfect. It had ferocity while still feeling realistic. The villains were each unique and had unbelievable performances. The Catwoman and Batman relationship looked stripped right out of the comics. There were a few moments Batman should have totally died, but we will let him slide…BECAUSE HE IS BATMAN!!! But seriously, this movie took an amazingly gritty approach and played it just right. A few questionable things here and there, but overall a fantastic watch with plenty of mystery and imagery.
