  • Saw VII (2010)

Gotta love how all these movies had to be 3D after Avatar made bank. This one also tied up the loose ends of the series finally. It had a few more twists up its sleeve but it finally came full circle. It also has a theme of lying for attention which I guess is a good moral to cover. Everyone dies in this one though. All the violence and gore you can ask for in a “final chapter”. The movies up to this point were a roller coaster in quality. It started to become a very gory soap opera. I guess that is to be excited when you want a complex plot but give your writers like 2 weeks to make a script. The series definitely needed to end after 7 straight Octobers in theatre. This has more of a cult status. I’m glad the movies were all 90 minutes so they never felt like they were overstaying their welcome. Give the Seven films a watch if you are feeling strong stomached. Story - 17% Characters - 16% Pacing - 16% Spectacle - 16% Entertainment - 17% Total score: 82% Grade scale: 90%-100% = must watch 80%-89% = solid, but could be better 70%-79% = Not terrible, watch if the characters or story interests you 60%-69% = only watch for completionist reasons 0%-59% = just skip it, I find the positives and they don't exist here

  • Justice League: The New Frontier (2008)

I do like some aspects of this film. The period piece aspect of the entire hero world felt different. Usually period pieces are done with solo outings. The ending where everything came together was done well. The steps getting there however felt sluggish and bland. This felt like an homage to the golden/silver age of comics. I would have liked more interaction with the Justice League members. It is a fine movie overall but not one I’ll actively watch again in the future. The voice actors were some pretty solid names. This had potential but didn’t quite do it for me. • X-Men: Dark Pheonix (2019)

This movie had the ingredients of a good movie. The story was meh, the characters were lackluster and uninteresting, and just felt blah. This felt phoned in by a majority of the cast. Jean is alive at the end of Future’s Past so this movie makes no sense existing. No one has aged despite it being 30+ years since First Class. The only good part of the movie was the train fight sequence. Other than that this was a lackluster movie that went through the motions. • Saw VI (2009)

I mostly loved the fact this whole movie was a big fat middle finger to the Insurance companies. They are 100% a scam and the reason medical prices are so outrageous. I’m not usually a fan of political agendas but I think most people agree without how annoying insurance companies are and how heartless you have to be to work there. Also, how did OG Jigsaw have so much setup and planned before his death? He died three movies ago and it all still ties back to him. He had a plan and goal. But his corrupt cop prodigy misses the whole point of Jigsaw. The point isn’t to kill. The point is to make someone suffer and see the error of their ways. Everyone should have a way out whether they are a player or a piece in the game. The over-arching stuff is still extra convoluted. I don’t know how they keep finding ways to tie in and expand to key moments from every movie before. There keeps being some twist and new perspective in every movie. I love it and hate it. I don’t even know anymore. It just keeps going. • Saw V (2008)

So there are two plots going on here. One plot is Jigsaw teaching his apprentice person via previous movie flashbacks. I assume this was to help pass the torch so these movies can keep going. The other plot was the bread and butter of people having to survive horrible traps. Neither side of this movie was super interesting. The franchise is clearly showing signs of convolutedness for the sake of keeping this alive. We have come quite a way from the simplicity of the first movie. Unless you want to see what violent task is used on bad people, you can probably just stop watching the franchise at Saw 4. • Superman: Doomsday (2008)

I was not expecting Kevin Smith to make a cameo and throw shade at his Superman script that was turned into Wild, Wild West. I think a great superhero movie explores the psyche of the hero. Spider-man’s relatability and perseverance. Batman’s fight to cope with his parents’ deaths. This one explores nature vs nurture. The namesake villain is only part of the first act. The real meat of this movie was the Superman clone Lex made while Superman was taking a “nap”. The clone has the empathy of Superman but without momma Kent, the clone doesn’t quite have the same moral compass. The clone knows good vs evil but doesn’t have the restraint to deliver justice rather than death. This definitely isn’t Christopher Reeves’ campy Superman. There is violence and grief and genuine pain. I love what they did with this. They really showed the power of animated storytelling. • Endgame (2019)

There are a few parts where it was very MacGuffin-y to move the story forward but fuck, this movie is amazing. The payoffs and the gut punches and fan service. I cried happy tears and sad tears. This movie had so much riding on it and it was the most satisfying conclusion to anything I’ve seen. I know this was a fanboy movie but I can’t help but love it. I genuinely argued with myself to adjust the points to be equal or even one percent less than Infinity War, but I can’t. Infinity War was the penultimate second act and Endgame was overcoming the obstacle and ending everything. This movie is so good and I hope I have this feeling 10 years down the road with the next big event movie. • The Shift (Released 12/1/23)

This is a religious movie disguised as a multiverse sci-fi movie. It uses the multiverse more in a butterfly effect way rather than a pizza couch way. The performances were solid but there were a lot of sci-fi elements that were just unexplained. The whole movie was made to show someone having hope when there was none. If you are religious and love futuristic dystopian tech, then you may like this. Story - 18% Characters - 18% Pacing - 17% Spectacle - 18% Entertainment - 17% Total score: 88% Grade scale: 90%-100% = must watch 80%-89% = solid, but could be better 70%-79% = Not terrible, watch if the characters or story interests you 60%-69% = only watch for completionist reasons 0%-59% = just skip it, I find the positives and they don't exist here

  • Saw IV (2007)

It’s even more connected! The story continues to flesh out Jigsaw and the people involved. This one probably has the most memorable set pieces. The pervert room, the seesaw trap, and the spoked man and woman. Despite being dead, Jigsaw gets even more backstory that shows his origins. Of course, there is also an insane final reveal at the end that the series likes to do. The fact that the timeline and characters are so tightly woven in this series is insane. This one is a bit more on the bland side compared to the previous entries. It is still a decent film and worth the watch if you can stomach it. Story - 18% Characters - 17% Pacing - 15% Spectacle - 17% Entertainment - 16% Total score: 83% Grade scale: 90%-100% = must watch 80%-89% = solid, but could be better 70%-79% = Not terrible, watch if the characters or story interests you 60%-69% = only watch for completionist reasons 0%-59% = just skip it, I find the positives and they don't exist here

  • Saw III (2006)

They actually did a good job of rounding up the trilogy. If it wanted to, it easily could have ended here. Of course, Hollywood will make these movies forever. It had a good message of revenge will bite you in the butt. It made everything from the first 2 movies connect and filled out the lore. It gave us what we came for torture and a layered story. The head surgery will forever be engrained in my head. This is a solid trilogy and should be watched by any that love a good story with torture porn spread throughout. Story - 19% Characters - 16% Pacing - 16% Spectacle - 17% Entertainment - 16% Total score: 84% Grade scale: 90%-100% = must watch 80%-89% = solid, but could be better 70%-79% = Not terrible, watch if the characters or story interests you 60%-69% = only watch for completionist reasons 0%-59% = just skip it, I find the positives and they don't exist here

  • Teen Titans: Trouble in Tokyo (2006)

Being taken out of the usual DC locations was a nice change of pace. Japan is also a great location because of its insane lore and even more insane personalities. My biggest dislike was the cringiness of the dialogue. This was definitely aimed more towards kids which means the writers don’t try as hard. That’s not to say it doesn’t have a couple of dark moments. The story and setting are great and is a great addition to the main show. Also, is it just me, or is it weird that the only member without powers kicks the most ass. Robin fights goons like it’s nothing while everyone struggles here and there. I know Batman trained him but come on. Good time though, would recommend it. Story - 18% Characters - 16% Pacing - 16% Spectacle - 17% Entertainment - 18% Total score: 85% Grade scale: 90%-100% = must watch 80%-89% = solid, but could be better 70%-79% = Not terrible, watch if the characters or story interests you 60%-69% = only watch for completionist reasons 0%-59% = just skip it, I find the positives and they don't exist here

  • Captain Marvel (2019)

I honestly love the sassiness and sarcasm of Carol and Fury. This honestly had a fairly empowering message for women to always push faster, further, and harder… that's what she said. But seriously it’s cool to see Carol become this OP cosmic entity. It was also cool to see it be a mild prequel to Guardians of the Galaxy as well. This movie was a little overshadowed at release by the approaching Endgame movie, but this one was a solid watch. Story - 16% Characters - 17% Pacing - 17% Spectacle - 18% Entertainment - 17% Total score: 85% Grade scale: 90%-100% = must watch 80%-89% = solid, but could be better 70%-79% = Not terrible, watch if the characters or story interests you 60%-69% = only watch for completionist reasons 0%-59% = just skip it, I find the positives and they don't exist here
