  • Dream Scenario (Released 11/10/23)

This movie goes about as advertised. An average Joe starts appearing in people's dreams. At first, he is just there, but it turns into either sexual or violent dreams. Everything falls apart for him. I do feel for him because it’s crazy how people can’t separate dreams from reality and get triggered seeing him. That feeling should mitigate a few minutes after waking up and realizing it was a dream. The performances are great and it makes you feel anger towards the people who treat him like shit because of their dreams. It does drag and bit at times but overall it is a fun movie with some dark undertones. Worth the watch. Story - 18% Characters - 17% Pacing - 16% Spectacle - 18% Entertainment - 18% Total score: 87% Grade scale: 90%-100% = must watch 80%-89% = solid, but could be better 70%-79% = Not terrible, watch if the characters or story interests you 60%-69% = only watch for completionist reasons 0%-59% = just skip it, I find the positives and they don't exist here

  • Godzilla Minus One (Released 12/1/23)

This movie was way better than I expected. Normally the human story is just filler in between Godzilla attacks. This time around it is a genuinely compelling story with Godzilla as the background threat. The visuals are spot on for only a $15 million budget. Everything about this movie is spectacular. It dragged here and there but overall, it was a great character movie with Godzilla doing his thing. Story - 20% Characters - 20% Pacing - 18% Spectacle - 19% Entertainment - 20% Total score: 97% Grade scale: 90%-100% = must watch 80%-89% = solid, but could be better 70%-79% = Not terrible, watch if the characters or story interests you 60%-69% = only watch for completionist reasons 0%-59% = just skip it, I find the positives and they don't exist here

  • Silent Night (Released 12/1/23)

This movie definitely put the silent in Silent Night. There were maybe 3 pages of actual dialogue and the rest of the script was scenery and actions. The trailer made it seem more like John Wick than what it actually was. It was more like a hybrid of Die Hard and The Punisher movie. It does a lot with no dialogue, but it just didn’t do anything unique. The most unique thing was the fact an average dad went on this rampage rather than a current/former cop/military person. It is an ok movie but would be better enjoyed from the comfort of your couch. • Saw II (2005)

I really liked the linear storytelling compared to the jumping around from the first film. Having a bunch of characters in the house allowed for a variety of personalities. The needle pit is nightmare fuel that I would wish upon no one. While not as classic, this continued the story in a very liberal, connected way. The twist at the end is also magnificent. This one stands well on its own and is very much worth the watch. You will be thoroughly stressed the whole time. Story - 18% Characters - 18% Pacing - 17% Spectacle - 17% Entertainment - 18% Total score: 88% Grade scale: 90%-100% = must watch 80%-89% = solid, but could be better 70%-79% = Not terrible, watch if the characters or story interests you 60%-69% = only watch for completionist reasons 0%-59% = just skip it, I find the positives and they don't exist here

  • Saw (2004)

This movie had a bit of trouble coming to fruition. The creators lived in Australia and tried to get it made there. Their agent told them to go to LA and pitch it. After making a short film based on one of the scenes from the film, it got support. Some of the acting was rough, but with less than 3 weeks to film, they did what they could. The story unravels in careful layers. The soundtrack and cinematography are very late 90s/early 2000s. They did a lot with the little they had and created a cult classic. Yes, this and the following movies are torture porn. That doesn’t mean they don't put a lot of effort into the story and lore. You know what to expect from this franchise. It’s violent and stressful rather than scary and that is nice to have in the horror genre. It’s definitely worth a watch if you have a strong stomach. Story - 19% Characters - 16% Pacing - 17% Spectacle - 19% Entertainment - 17% Total score: 88% Grade scale: 90%-100% = must watch 80%-89% = solid, but could be better 70%-79% = Not terrible, watch if the characters or story interests you 60%-69% = only watch for completionist reasons 0%-59% = just skip it, I find the positives and they don't exist here

  • Superman: Brainiac Attacks (2006)

This one came out of the gate swinging. Within 5 minutes Superman is getting his ass handed to him by Brainiac with the help of some Lex tech. This one puts a big emphasis on relationships. Don’t miss out because of skin-deep attraction and don’t be afraid to be honest with your feelings. It is a little cliche but it is nice to have something resembling character development. The action is intense and there are some nail-biting moments. It does feel a little on the slow side at times but overall it is a great Superman story. Story - 17% Characters - 18% Pacing - 16% Spectacle - 18% Entertainment - 17% Total score: 86% Grade scale: 90%-100% = must watch 80%-89% = solid, but could be better 70%-79% = Not terrible, watch if the characters or story interests you 60%-69% = only watch for completionist reasons 0%-59% = just skip it, I find the positives and they don't exist here

  • Venom (2018)

This movie did nothing special as far as superhero movies go, but there were good aspects. Namely, the relationship between Venom and Eddie. It lacks the Spider-man origin which I’m honestly ok with. This movie was more entertaining than anything which is all you can ask for from a movie at the bare minimum. Story - 14% Characters - 17% Pacing - 18% Spectacle - 16% Entertainment - 18% Total score: 83% Grade scale: 90%-100% = must watch 80%-89% = solid, but could be better 70%-79% = Not terrible, watch if the characters or story interests you 60%-69% = only watch for completionist reasons 0%-59% = just skip it, I find the positives and they don't exist here

  • Anatomy of a Fall (Released 10/13/23)

I didn’t really plan on seeing this movie but I wanted to see something and this was something I hadn’t seen yet. It is a French courtroom drama where a woman is on trial to figure out if her husband was murdered or committed suicide. The best witness is her son but he is blind and tries to tune out when his parents fight. It has incredible performances from everyone. The story plays out like a breadcrumb mystery. Little reveals spread throughout. I didn’t hate the movie but it did drag at times. I zoned out a couple of times only to realize it was the same scene going on. I commend the story and performances but all the other aspects could have been better. Story - 18% Characters - 19% Pacing - 16% Spectacle - 16% Entertainment - 16% Total score: 85% Grade scale: 90%-100% = must watch 80%-89% = solid, but could be better 70%-79% = Not terrible, watch if the characters or story interests you 60%-69% = only watch for completionist reasons 0%-59% = just skip it, I find the positives and they don't exist here

  • Napoleon (Released 11/22/23)

I’m gonna be real, my only issue with this movie is the fact they made no attempt to de-age Joaquin Phoenix. They cover his mid-20s to his exile decades later. Other than that, the set pieces were actually pretty amazing. There was subtle humor throughout but nothing that was overly distracting. I do think Pheonix is being typecast as a weirdo. Napoleon felt like a weird laugh and clown makeup away from being the Joker. This is a decent movie with historical moments that are split up by personal relationship drama with his wife. There is supposed to be an extended cut on Apple+ so if you are one of the 10 people that actually has that streaming service, it is worth a watch. Story - 18% Characters - 18% Pacing - 18% Spectacle - 20% Entertainment - 17% Total score: 91% Grade scale: 90%-100% = must watch 80%-89% = solid, but could be better 70%-79% = Not terrible, watch if the characters or story interests you 60%-69% = only watch for completionist reasons 0%-59% = just skip it, I find the positives and they don't exist here

  • Wish (Released 11/22/23)

I have 2 key issues with the movie. Only the main song of this movie is catchy and memorable. I miss the days when Disney movies had multiple bangers in the same movie. The other issue I have is that I get kids movies are supposed to be simple and have a central theme of family, friendship, courage, etc. This just felt too quick and hollow. Yes, the theme is you can’t wait for someone else to make your wish come true, you have to go at it yourself. It’s a good theme, but the plot is just too simple. It could pass more as a short story rather than a full length story. I just wanted more out of this. The Queen has the biggest arc in the movie. She is a side character but somehow has the most growth. This is definitely a “watch on Disney+ when you are bored” kind of thing. Story - 16% Characters - 18% Pacing - 17% Spectacle - 18% Entertainment - 16% Total score: 85% Grade scale: 90%-100% = must watch 80%-89% = solid, but could be better 70%-79% = Not terrible, watch if the characters or story interests you 60%-69% = only watch for completionist reasons 0%-59% = just skip it, I find the positives and they don't exist here

  • Thanksgiving (11/17/23)

The best way I can describe this movie is Scream but rather than the shtick be metaness, its Thanksgiving. The kills are gruesome in the best way possible. Some of the characters were kind of annoying so you hoped they die which in a movie like this is perfectly fine. It does a decent job of making you question who the killer is. This movie is also not afraid to go for the shock value. But this movie also had a great message of maybe stop worrying about black friday (on Thanksgiving night) and be with your family. Then just maybe you don’t create a killer. This is a fun movie through and through. And of course, they do the classic “we couldn’t find the body” in case they wanna do a sequel. I definitely recommend this as long as you have the stomach for gore. Story - 17% Characters - 17% Pacing - 17% Spectacle - 19% Entertainment - 20% Total score: 90% Grade scale: 90%-100% = must watch 80%-89% = solid, but could be better 70%-79% = Not terrible, watch if the characters or story interests you 60%-69% = only watch for completionist reasons 0%-59% = just skip it, I find the positives and they don't exist here

  • Glass Onion (2022)

This really was a middle finger to COVID-19 and capitalism. I loved the different angle they went with this one. It is still the same type of mystery but with more layers. Get it? Layers? I’ll be here all week. But the cast was even better this time around. It showed how scared and pathetic people are when their careers hinge on one person's wallet. The ending is so satisfying. I hope these keep coming and build a universe of Benoit Blanc mysteries. Story - 20% Characters - 19% Pacing - 18% Spectacle - 18% Entertainment - 19% Total score: 94% Grade scale: 90%-100% = must watch 80%-89% = solid, but could be better 70%-79% = Not terrible, watch if the characters or story interests you 60%-69% = only watch for completionist reasons 0%-59% = just skip it, I find the positives and they don't exist here
