The Evil Dead (2013)

It is hard to judge this movie properly. It does a great job of making realistic horror gore, but the low-budget look of the classics had its charm. They did manage to out-blood the previous movies by making it literally rain blood. So that’s neat. The story and characters all felt too generic horror and weren’t really interesting. There isn’t anyone I’m really rooting for because they are all self-centered and only try to do what they want. There are a lot of homages to the original films which were welcome and its biggest saving grace. They even threw in the super shot through the woods effect. The movie itself felt flat, but it tried to modernize a unique classic in a fresh way. I would be curious to see how the originally planned sequel with Ash would have played out. Sadly, the stars never aligned. If you want a run-of-the-mill modern horror film with some of the Evil Dead flair, then give it a watch. It is not a must-watch, but it is a decent time if you love horror.
