  • Werewolf by Night (2022)

This was a spectacular spooky Marvel event. I hope to see more things like this. Classic horror is amazing and it had those classic Universal Monsters vibes. I need more of this type of stuff. Would have scored higher if there was more Marvelness to it. It’s not a huge detractor tho. • Black Panther (2018)

This movie didn’t really strike a chord with me when it first came out. This movie wasn’t made for me besides being a Marvel movie. It was made for all the black boys and girls around the world who deserved representation on the superhero stage. This movie shifted the scales to show not just representation with race but led to female and LGBTQ representation in future movies. I see it as a Lion King copy. To so many people around the world, it is so much more and I think that's a very good thing. I don’t need representation. I have dozens of heroes to idolize, and it was time there were more than white men as heroes. Despite all that, the story is fine and the characters are very iconic. I just think it could have been done better. • Five Nights at Freddy's (released 10/27/23)

Let’s be real, these murderous machines just want a friend to play with. Full disclosure, I have enough background thanks to youtubers that I didn’t feel completely out the loop. Speaking of youtubers, Matpat of film/game/food/style theory made a cameo and it was fantastic. Obviously took you out the movie for a second but the theory man himself having a cameo was well deserved. The characters were all enjoyable in this. The aunt is the freakin’ worst but that was by design. The big twist at the end isn’t as surprising if you pay attention early on. I thought it was a great movie. Blumhouse really does a great job of making silly horror which is what you need for a Chuck E. Cheese rip-off. If you aren't satiated enough by the violence in this, watch The Banana Splits. It is a similar concept and much more gory. Though this does have more character development so if you want a decent enough story, stick to FNAF. This was a great horror addition. In the fun category, I rank it pretty high. In the scary/gory category, it could use some work. This may have been better as R-rated but I get they wanted to stick to the not-very-gory game roots. I overall do recommend this film. • The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It (2021)

They did a really awesome job with this one. Rather than the normal someone is possessed and they get it out, there was a mystery/thriller aspect to it. They had to solve who was summoning the demons for the ritual. It’s a race against the clock to prevent more death and save someone from the death penalty. This felt fresh while still being part of this larger universe. The franchise finally found its voice with the last couple of movies. I hope they continue the trend of innovating the possession drama to keep it fresh without losing itself. I definitely recommend this one. It helps to see the previous films, but not required for this one. • Annabelle Comes Home (2019)

This one honestly caught me by surprise. It honestly gave me a serious version of Goosebumps vibes. I actually cared about all the characters and was rooting for them. This is easily the best Annabelle movie and is arguably one of the best in the series. It was just a fun, spooky time. It had a lot of the scare tropes that this universe lives on. It does a great job doing something new and nailing it. The pacing as usual was a little on the slow side but not unbearable. I highly recommend checking this one out. The setup makes more sense if you watch the other movies, but this does ultimately stand on its own. • V for Vendetta (2006)

On paper, I should have enjoyed this movie. In reality, it could not keep my attention. I can appreciate the themes of a totalitarian government and its effect on people who don’t conform to the norms. It was just presented in a way that only grabbed my attention during fight scenes. I didn’t enjoy this watch but there is definitely an audience for a vigilante trying to disrupt a totalitarian government. Story - 17% Characters - 15% Pacing - 14% Spectacle - 16% Entertainment - 15% Total score: 77% Grade scale: 90%-100% = must watch 80%-89% = solid, but could be better 70%-79% = Not terrible, watch if the characters or story interests you 60%-69% = only watch for completionist reasons 0%-59% = just skip it, I find the positives and they don't exist here

  • Thor: Ragnorak (2017)

Taika was like “I wanna make this movie freaky but still have heart and character growth”. This movie was the silliest and most irreverent of the entire MCU but still had Thor grow as a character to reach his full potential despite losing everything which gets explored more in the next Avenger movies. Hearing Bruce say anus and orgies was something that I never thought would happen. This movie is amazing and deserves a spot amongst the elite Marvel movies. Story - 18% Characters - 19% Pacing - 18% Spectacle - 20% Entertainment - 18% Total score: 93% Grade scale: 90%-100% = must watch 80%-89% = solid, but could be better 70%-79% = Not terrible, watch if the characters or story interests you 60%-69% = only watch for completionist reasons 0%-59% = just skip it, I find the positives and they don't exist here

  • The Curse of La Llorona (2019)

I think Hawkeye’s wife being the main character definitely made it easier to be interested. This is very parred for the course in the franchise but added some fun Hispanic folklore this time around. It was very middle of the road overall. I did love the look for the “demon gets defeated” effect. Other than that it was just a demon that liked drowning kids. Let’s find a way to defeat it. This is also the least connected to the franchise. The only thread is the priest from Annabelle. It’s an alright watch, but not something you need to go out of your way to watch. Story - 16% Characters - 16% Pacing - 15% Spectacle - 18% Entertainment - 16% Total score: 81% Grade scale: 90%-100% = must watch 80%-89% = solid, but could be better 70%-79% = Not terrible, watch if the characters or story interests you 60%-69% = only watch for completionist reasons 0%-59% = just skip it, I find the positives and they don't exist here

  • The Nun (2018)

I think the demonic entity appearing and disappearing is getting a little abused in this one. I do like it when these kinds of movies have religious figures vs demons since it feels like an appropriate battle. There weren’t really any jumpscares which I appreciated. The 3 main characters were grounded and felt well portrayed. My biggest gripe is this movie felt slow. It’s just over 90 minutes but felt way longer. Definitely worth checking out though if you need a horror movie to watch. Story - 17% Characters - 18% Pacing - 14% Spectacle - 17% Entertainment - 17% Total score: 83% Grade scale: 90%-100% = must watch 80%-89% = solid, but could be better 70%-79% = Not terrible, watch if the characters or story interests you 60%-69% = only watch for completionist reasons 0%-59% = just skip it, I find the positives and they don't exist here

  • The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (2003)

This movie is basically an Avengers/Justice League of classic literature characters like Captain Nemo and Jekyll/Hyde. In a steampunk alternate past, a team is formed to prevent the great war in 1899. The concept is really cool, but the execution felt a little basic. There are a lot of one-liners and quips. The visual effects are very outdated despite coming out the same year of the visual masterpiece that is Return of the King. It is a fun popcorn flick but nothing more. It almost had a James Bond/Mission Impossible-type plot. Interesting concepts, but it still lacks that oomph to be special. Story - 17% Characters - 16% Pacing - 17% Spectacle - 17% Entertainment - 16% Total score: 83% Grade scale: 90%-100% = must watch 80%-89% = solid, but could be better 70%-79% = Not terrible, watch if the characters or story interests you 60%-69% = only watch for completionist reasons 0%-59% = just skip it, I find the positives and they don't exist here

  • Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017)

In the context of the MCU, this is a fine film but I never loved this movie. Spider-man is one of my favorite superheroes but this movie never sat right with me. It felt too MCU and not enough Spider-man. I wanted so badly to love it since Tom Holland is amazing in the role. As always, this movie tried to tease the sinister six from the get-go. The only true spidey moment was when he got out of the rubble when you can hear in his voice he was terrified. One moment isn’t enough though. Story - 16% Characters - 17% Pacing - 15% Spectacle - 16% Entertainment - 18% Total score: 82% Grade scale: 90%-100% = must watch 80%-89% = solid, but could be better 70%-79% = Not terrible, watch if the characters or story interests you 60%-69% = only watch for completionist reasons 0%-59% = just skip it, I find the positives and they don't exist here

  • Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie (Released 9/29/23)

I’m so glad I saw this when there was only a single family in the theatre, otherwise, this would have been extra weird. The movie is basically Power Rangers meets Fantastic Four. Being a kids' movie, the plot was basic but has some genuinely heartfelt moments. The idea of reaching your potential when you are small or just can’t see it yet. The pacing was a little slow at times which is odd for a kids' movie. Kids' movies usually move quickly to keep kids’ attention. I actually really liked the movie. It was a simple, fun kids superhero movie. It did all the usual tropes but you have to introduce said tropes to kids at some point. Great movie for the whole family. Story - 17% Characters - 18% Pacing - 16% Spectacle - 18% Entertainment - 18% Total score: 87% Grade scale: 90%-100% = must watch 80%-89% = solid, but could be better 70%-79% = Not terrible, watch if the characters or story interests you 60%-69% = only watch for completionist reasons 0%-59% = just skip it, I find the positives and they don't exist here
