- X-Men: Apocalypse (2016)
The timeline issues really start to come through in this movie. The Wolverine scene, while cool, doesn’t make sense for the continuity of Origins and the first X-men movie. Also being a prequel, we knew the outcome so having a doomsday doesn't make sense. This movie looks cool and has cool moments but the timeline is off and the story feels underwhelming. First Class was small enough scale to make you worry and Future’s Past had the future as a stake with the happy ending. This movie doesn’t make sense where it is but like I said, it has cool moments and scenes. A disappointing entry into the less-good cousin of John Wick. The only standout parts of this are the action scenes which are really solid. The plot however felt a bit flat. It just seemed like bad guys were introduced to be cannon fodder. It doesn’t have the charm of the first movie or the deep connections of the sequel. It just feels like an obligatory sequel so Denzel Washington can look like a badass one last time. There wasn’t much added to the story and it just felt like the generic retired badass defends his new home from a no-name mafia/cartel. There could have been so much more substance but it just wasn’t there. Hopefully, with a trilogy complete, they put this meh action franchise to rest. It doesn’t have the world-building of John Wick or the mindless action of The Expendables. It just exists. - Retribution (Released 8/25/23)
Poor Liam Neeson is just getting typecast in these movies. He keeps playing a generic husband who is forced into vehicles and stops the bad guy before he gets killed. This felt like a slightly different version of Speed. Nothing like a good bomb on a vehicle rigged to blow. The characters had forced “development” and came across like a half-baked story. The great sales pitch that couldn’t go beyond the pitch. It just develops weirdly and ends kinda of rushed. Not really worth the watch unless you are a Liam Neeson fan. - The Meg (2018)
Is this a knock-off of Jaws? Yes. Does it matter? Nah. This movie is based on a book that was genuinely inspired by the Jaws films and even spawned a whole series of books. We are here for the shark carnage and this film very much delivers on that. The dialogue is cliche as hell and sounds straight out of an 80s action movie. All their characters were interesting enough but the little girl and her mom were the only ones that I would be emotionally wrecked if they died…well, the doggo, too. The beach scene was probably the most intense purely because it was a busy beach that would already give me a panic attack without a shark nearby. There is plenty of shark murder action so if you are feeling up to that kind of movie, this is for you. - Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows (2016)
While this film still has its flaws, it did a lot more for fan service. It felt like a Saturday morning cartoon come to life but this time not cringe. Shredder is a villain that keeps getting misused. The only film he was decent was the previous movie but his dialogue kinda sucked. Krang should not have worked in live-action but he did. Oliver Queen as Casey Jones is a fitting choice. Everything about this movie improved the last one. The plot is still very unoriginal and done before. That being said, this one nailed the Turtle movie formula and I would have loved to see a third movie come out to at least give them a proper final climax and nail everything perfectly. - Peacemaker (2022)
James Gunn really does know what he is doing when he is at the reigns. Whether he is doing PG-13 or R-rated, you know you are in for a silly yet somehow touching ride. This show continues the story of Peacemaker after The Suicide Squad film. It brings in smaller characters from the movie and introduces several new characters. The story unfolded in a natural way and the stakes kept being raised in every episode. This is a movie that screwed around when it wanted to but was serious when it needed to be. If you are over the age of like 16 or 17, go ahead and give this a watch. If you are under that age, I didn’t see anything. - Captain America: Civil War (2016)
The convolutedness of Zemo’s plan aside, this movie is another banger from the Russo Brothers. There was a lot of fun fan service while also telling a compelling story about choices and consequences. I bet we can all agree the airport scene was the highlight moment. It was also nice to see Spidey and Black Panther introduced into the MCU. This really was Avengers 2.5 and was a true warm-up to make the 2-part Avengers follow-up. - Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2014)
This is essentially the Michael Bay Transformers movies with the plot of The Amazing Spiderman in a Ninja Turtles skin. There were a lot of things that are really great about this movie, namely the turtles and April. Will Arnett’s character was too much of a comedic relief when one of the turtles already had that in his personality. The turtles look really good 95% of the time. This was a decent first outing for the reboot. The villain dialogue comes off too cartoony and mustache twirly. This movie gets a lot right but needs to get some of the writing improved and they could have a fantastic film. This one is worth the watch for sure. - TMNT (2007)
I was thoroughly surprised by how good this movie was. The turtles’ personalities actually shined through to where they don’t all feel like color-coded clones. They each joked and had sarcasm that fit their personalities. It also felt like a unique story that wasn’t just another attempt at the Shredder villain. There was lore and thought put into it. The animation was hit or miss. This is a good gold standard for the minimum quality of a TMNT story. Also, Uncle Iroh is Splinter so that’s awesome. The voice acting is actually top-notch with a lot of well-known actors. Definitely check this movie out if you get a chance. - The Suicide Squad (2021)
James Gunn is a really fun writer/director. He is able to make immature jokes while telling a compelling, layered story. Every character was played to perfection. The proper amount of stakes. Humor and drama. It is just a fun ride from beginning to end. Flula should have been in the movie more. A romance between him and Harley would be so cute. I love this movie. It would have made bank at the box office if it didn’t release the same day on HBO Max. This is a must-watch R-rated party. - Deadpool (2016)
Maybe I’m a bit partial to Ryan Reynolds. This movie is hilarious and every character is funny in their own way. The story is a fun way of telling the origin story. It’s not a groundbreaking story but it did its job well. I remember seeing this in theatres and it was a blast. I actually went on a Valentine’s date. It was more of a 2 friends not wanting to be alone kind of situation but it was still a fun night...anywhoooo. Stan Lee probably had the biggest blast doing his cameo at a strip club. This movie is a treasure and I can’t wait for more from Ryan Reynold’s Deadpool. - Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III (1993)
The good ole time travel to an older time period in the third movie trope (see Back to the Future III and Army of Darkness aka Evil Dead 3). This keeps the same tone as the previous two films. The tones kinda clash when you have the silly turtles mixed with super serious Japanese warriors. Shredder and his men had an over-the-top comic-book villain vibe. This just felt too serious and jokey at the same time. This trilogy as a whole is not terrible. The action is actually done fairly well for dudes in rubber suits. The turtles are just a little too cartoony. The live-action movies should have made them a tad more serious to stand out from the Saturday morning cartoon. Give the trilogy a watch once in a while but don’t expect greatness.
