- Blade Trinity (2004)
Wesley…my dude…you cashed this one in. You could tell he enjoyed the first 2 movies but this one felt phoned in. There was drama behind the scenes of course but I actually like Reynolds and Biel despite it feeling unnecessary. This movie had much more potential but they just couldn’t make it work. It's still worth a watch if you are a fan of Ryan Reynolds or Blade as a whole. It's just not as good of a movie as it should have been. - Titanic (1997) (25th anniversary)
I genuinely cannot tell you the last time I saw this movie from beginning to end. It has been so long since I've seen it that I straight-up forgot Jack got on the ship with a friend. Since it had been such a long time, I loved seeing actors I never knew were in the movie like Bill Paxton and Kathy Bates. Kathy Bates steals every scene she is in, and is a genuine treasure. I personally wish they would have had the option to see the movie in a non-3D format. I personally hate 3-D movies because after a while my brain makes most of the stuff seem 2-D anyway. The love story at the center of this is the Romeo and Juliet formula which works well. The characters were vibrant and mostly fleshed out. The villains seemed bad for the sake of being manly men who think they are above women. And of course, the true villain of the movie is the iceberg and overconfidence with a splash of bad luck. A lot of the stuff that is mentioned are real reasons the ship sank. But thinking the ship was unsinkable when it is still made of steel is a glaring oversight just to sell tickets. The movie tells a great story, it's emotional, it has humor, and it has drawings of French girls. Titanic is definitely a movie worth seeing in theatres and one of the must-see movies of all time. Up there with the Wizard of Oz and A New Hope. It is a cinematic masterpiece in its own right. They had the runtime match the actual time it took for the Titanic to sink for crying out loud. That is commitment. - Ant-man and the Wasp: Quantumania (released 2/17/23)
Let me just start off by saying this movie is visually stunning. The Quantum Realm was a cacophony of visuals. That isn't to say this movie is without rough visuals. The worst visual is Darren Cross' face on M.O.D.O.K. without face armor. But other than that, the movie is stunning and shows how much of a beast Kang is. He has technology that is beyond comprehension and fighting skills that make me scared for Michael B. Jordan in Creed 3. Paul Rudd and the gang are all charismatic and fun to watch. This movie truly sets up the future which was kinda detrimental to the story. It felt more like a Kang the Conqueror origin movie slapped on Ant-man film. The goal to make this a huge film and not a palette cleanser was definitely achieved. There is a huge battle at the end that was pretty awesome. This movie felt like it can almost fit as a Star Wars spin-off. I don't want to say too much to avoid spoilers, but this is a fine continuation of the Marvel mythos. It's not a perfect movie by any means, but it's a step in the right direction. - Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey (One-night event 2/15/23)
This movie did exactly what I wanted it to do. It was a dark take on Winnie the Pooh and we are all here for the creative kills. The kills were the one thing they got right. They also treated Winnie like a Jason Vorhees/Michael Myers hybrid. The plot itself was basic and lackluster but it was still a thrill to watch. If you ever get the opportunity to watch it anywhere, please go for it. Especially if you like 80s slashers. I'm ready for that sequel baby!! - Rocky 2 (1979)
Rocky 2 is a true sequel. Not only does it pick up where the last one left off, but it shows the aftermath of success. Rocky went the distance against the champion so everyone wants him to be a part of their investments. Rocky starts splurging and while he does share with Adrian and his friends, he starts losing his way. Adrian doesn’t want to see him hurt so she begs him to not fight which Rocky, being a good husband, listens to her. There are hardships following the euphoric income they received from the fight and promotions. It all gets overcome, leading to Adrian’s mutual support for Rocky to kick some ass. The story follows a natural progression while never forgetting who these characters are. This movie had all the heart and passion of the first outing plus some. - Rocky (1976)
The first Rocky movie is a classic in its own right. It's the story of a guy half-assing his way through a boxing career. He has to do a side hustle of roughing guys up for a loan shark to make ends meet. Despite being a brute, he has a genuine heart to him. Rocky cares about all the people around him. The movie even won an Academy Award for best picture. Everything about this movie is underdog sports drama at its finest. The best thing they did to Rocky’s character was make him a nobody and have him be motivated to be the best fighter he can be. He wants to be somebody and I think that is beautiful. - Superman 4: The Quest for Peace (1987)
You would think after 3 movies in the can, they would realize that maybe physics should exist to some extent. Like how does a human survive in space? How does Superman magically fix the Great Wall? So many implications for all these impossibilities. I am glad the tone was closer to the first movie this time around. Still campy as hell but at least this time in the right way. This movie isn’t fantastic but I definitely enjoyed it more than Superman 3. - Spiderman 2 (2004)
The movie has always been popular and for good reason. It explores the struggle of Peter trying to balance being a hero and a normal person. This struggle has always been one of the key elements of a good Spider-man story. It has one of the best emotional performances in Otto Octavius. While the Green Goblin was a force to be reckoned with and was 100% off the rails, Otto was a more sympathetic character. A prisoner in the shackles of his own machine. This movie was superhero perfection at the time. Great story, great set pieces, and an all-around well-crafted story. - Magic Mike's Last Dance (Released 2/10/23)
This movie had me thinking of something I never thought I would think about the trilogy as a whole. So scale-wise, this had the natural progression of a city movie to a road-trip movie to an international movie. But storywise, this would make more sense as the second movie. The arc could have been all the stuff that happened in the first movie. Then, he steps away and keeps working odd jobs until he is discovered by Selma Hayek. She offers him a gig to spruce up a live show. It’s successful and all is good. Then everything is back to basics after a falling out but he managed to start a business. The old crew begs him to go on a trip and do one last show before the whole crew truly gives up the dancer's life. The road trip can be a memory lane trip and it ends with the epic finale. Instead, we get this awkward almost midlife crisis movie. As a whole, this third movie is enjoyable but it felt more rom-com than the drama that it started out as. It’s not a bad movie, but it doesn’t really give much reason for existing in the franchise. It has some callbacks, but other than that, this could have straight up been its own independent movie. It could have even passed as a soft reboot. Honestly, only see it if you like the franchise or Channing Tatum/Selma Hayek. - Magic Mike XXL (2015)
How do you make a sequel to a movie about strippers and the breakdown of life drama? You make it a road trip movie obviously. There were still plenty of dramatic moments, but it was about the group’s last hurrah before they all became boring adults…despite already being in their mid-30s and older. There were plenty of eye-candy scenes. Joe Manganiello’s character at the convenience store was the best one on the trip obviously. There were lots of cool cameos and the finale dance-off was well worth the build-up throughout the movie. Like the first movie, come for the eye candy dances, and stay for the characters/drama. This movie is very on par with its predecessor. - Magic Mike (2012)
The selling point of the movie is obviously the sex appeal of some very fit big-name actors. At its core, it is honestly a solid movie about being an entrepreneur and the struggles that come along with it. Whether your business is done legally or not, there will always be hurdles. And of course, when drugs are involved, things get messy fast. The chemistry between the stars is impeccable and it tells a genuine, borderline gritty story of that Cali lifestyle when you have the grandest of ambitions. The drama and lack of score during the dramatic scenes are expertly contrasted with the fun, upbeat stripper show scenes. It’s like Game of Thrones. Come for the eye candy, stay for the actually compelling story. It’s worth a watch, but make sure you watch it with people you are comfortable with. There is male stripping after all. - Supergirl: The Movie (1984)
Just…no. Bad acting, bad story, bad everything. The flying effects improved slightly at least from the previous Superman movies. Just skip this one.
