  • X-2: X-Men United (2003)

The first movie was a solid enough introduction but this sequel had amazing character development and a proper story. It also did a good job of continuing the political arguments that resonate parallel to the problems of today. The first film is a classic, but this film took it up a notch. This is perhaps one of the best entries in the X-Men franchise of movies. • Missing (released 1/20/23)

This movie was actually better than I expected. The entire movie is shot through everything except a movie camera. There was even a part filmed on a smartwatch. There were plenty of twists and the whole time you are waiting to figure out who the bad party is. Lots of 180 reveals after guiding you to specific people and then the movie is like "lol you thought!" The end does go into a bit of a generic thriller, but it ends well enough. This is a fun ride that did some creative cinematography. Javier is the sweetest, best character ever. I definitely recommend you check it out. It's a bit of a Gen Z movie but it works! Side note, I call BS that a teenager would be that handy with technology. Kids these days can barely work a Chromebook. • House Party 2 (1991)

Such a step up from the first movie. There was still plenty of over-the-top humor but the characters actually go through a lot this time. The whole movie is about the idea of growing up and being mature, but not at the cost of what makes you, you. There was definitely more maturity to the story and it was nice to see Kid actually try to overcome the hurdles and do his best in school. This is a step in the right direction. It still has the silly humor but brought real issues and drama to the forefront. The bullies are obnoxious as always. If you need a comedy with an actual decent story, watch this over the first one. Or watch both. They are equally mindless fun. • House Party (1990)

House Party is a light-hearted comedy that 100% screams the 90s. While the introvert in me got anxiety from the party scenes, the party takes center stage for a large chunk of the film. Most comedies would spend 10, 15 minutes tops on the big party scene. The whole premise is about getting to the party and having a great night despite countless hurdles. There were a few really good character moments but they didn’t come until the movie was nearly over. While I personally didn’t love the movie, this would definitely tickle the fancy of a lot of people. If you are interested, give it a watch. At worst you will hit the credits and go “Meh, that was fine”. • Superman II (1981)

This movie and the more modern Man of Steel have a lot in common. That is to be expected with the same villains. Despite the limitations of the time, it still was action-packed. They did some questionable things i.e. the finger point power and the S plastic sheet thing. Idk, the fights had odd moments. Lex kinda became annoying in this one. He was more worried about saving his ass and getting a small sliver of the world pie. The chemistry between Clark and Lois is fantastic and a strong point in the film. It just sucks that this movie had a similar studio interference that WB/DC has been infamous for even in the last several years. Donner Cut: I watched the Donner cut the day after I watched the original version. The dialogue and events were a little better in some places and the weird plastic sheet attack was gone. I don’t think it made a huge difference to the enjoyment. I’m always for director over studio, but this didn’t change that much of the experience in my opinion. Story - 15% Characters - 16% Pacing - 14% Spectacle - 17% Entertainment - 18% Total score: 80% Grade scale: 90%-100% = must watch 80%-89% = solid, but could be better 70%-79% = Not terrible, watch if the characters or story interests you 60%-69% = only watch for completionist reasons 0%-59% = just skip it, I find the positives and they don't exist here

  • Daredevil (2003)

This movie started off hot but there was way too much inconsistency. I get Daredevil has super senses, but he is still just a person. He can’t make the super jumps that he does and the general story/character suffered with it. The action and Bullseye character helped with the spectacle factor but that’s the sole thing that saved this from a worse score. The movie has some fun moments, but not really good overall. Stick to the Charlie Cox version of the character. Story - 12% Characters - 8% Pacing - 13% Spectacle - 14% Entertainment - 15% Total score: 62% Grade scale: 90%-100% = must watch 80%-89% = solid, but could be better 70%-79% = Not terrible, watch if the characters or story interests you 60%-69% = only watch for completionist reasons 0%-59% = just skip it, I find the positives and they don't exist here

  • Plane (released 1/13/23)

It's not a movie that broke any boundaries because it felt like a run-of-the-mill action movie. Plane felt like Die Hard meets Rambo, just not quite as good. There was an action scene that even Rambo himself would approve of. The character motivations were fairly basic. The villain was just a generic "I get what I want and I'll kill if I want to do so" kind of dude. The passengers were also generic as well which I suppose does add to the realism. Honestly, the whole movie could have been avoided if the control tower let the pilot do a small detour rather than ram straight into the storm. But then again, it wouldn't be a movie without it. The pacing was fine, I would say it only felt like 10-15 minutes longer than it actually was. Gerard Butler and Mike Colter were engaging and entertaining enough to help with the filler parts. Overall, this is a decent action flick. Nothing special, just a few cool action moments in the final act. If you want a simple action/thriller that entertains from beginning to end, then this is your movie. Story - 14% Characters - 15% Pacing - 16% Spectacle - 18% Entertainment - 19% Total score: 82% Grade scale: 90%-100% = must watch 80%-89% = solid, but could be better 70%-79% = Not terrible, watch if the characters or story interests you 60%-69% = only watch for completionist reasons 0%-59% = just skip it, I find the positives and they don't exist here

  • House Party (Released 1/13/23)

House Party was brought to our modern age and it was hit or miss. The story was a retread of the original, but the stakes are raised by throwing the party at Lebron’s. The first two-thirds of the movie was just fan service to the original movies from the bullies to the music dreams of the lead. The last act of the movie decided to jump the shark and oh my god, it became instantly so much better. It had some good jokes throughout, but the side quest in act three made the movie worth it. It was a fun modernization of House Party that could potentially bring the magic of the originals to a new, modern audience. Honestly, I didn’t even know there were 5 movies in this franchise prior to Wikipedia laying it out for me. It’s a fun comedy to watch if you just want to turn your mind off and enjoy nonsensical shenanigans. Story - 15% Characters - 16% Pacing - 16% Spectacle - 18% Entertainment - 18% Total score: 83% Grade scale: 90%-100% = must watch 80%-89% = solid, but could be better 70%-79% = Not terrible, watch if the characters or story interests you 60%-69% = only watch for completionist reasons 0%-59% = just skip it, I find the positives and they don't exist here

  • Superman (1978)

This movie was the first true superhero blockbuster. The first part of the movie, while important, dragged a bit. Once we get to adulthood, the movie really takes off. Christopher Reeve played a clumsy reporter beautifully and the clumsiness is still there a little even when he is the confident Superman. The only obvious issue is the lack of physics, even for a superhero movie. Other than that, it was a great movie and deserves the love it gets. But seriously, do you even physics, bro? Story - 15% Characters - 16% Pacing - 16% Spectacle - 17% Entertainment - 17% Total score: 81% Grade scale: 90%-100% = must watch 80%-89% = solid, but could be better 70%-79% = Not terrible, watch if the characters or story interests you 60%-69% = only watch for completionist reasons 0%-59% = just skip it, I find the positives and they don't exist here

  • Spider-man (2002)

The thing that could have helped this movie was the spectacle rating. It wasn’t boring by any means and I love this movie. It just didn’t wow me outside the classic flying blades in the burning building moment. It did a good job as far as origin stories go. This movie was a fabulous addition to the budding superhero landscape. The soundtrack was also very on point. I feel everyone has to see this movie. Maybe that is the nostalgia talking, but Sam Raimi crafted something special. Story - 18% Characters - 17% Pacing - 17% Spectacle - 15% Entertainment - 16% Total score: 83% Grade scale: 90%-100% = must watch 80%-89% = solid, but could be better 70%-79% = Not terrible, watch if the characters or story interests you 60%-69% = only watch for completionist reasons 0%-59% = just skip it, I find the positives and they don't exist here

  • Wonder Woman "Pilot" (1975)

Similar to Superman and the Mole-men before it, this was a pilot more than a proper movie. This has its own place in pop culture so it deserved to be seen as well. The movie definitely left a good bit to be desired, and I’m sure some stuff was fixed over the course of the show. It was similar to Gal Gadot’s first Wonder Woman movie with a focus on Steve Trevor and her being a fish out of water in the real world. Say what you will about the sexualization of the Amazons in Zack Snyder’s movies, but the Amazons in this version looked less like warriors and more like sorority girls. It had a similar tone to the Adam West Batman but toned down slightly. Diana’s strength is also inconsistent. One second she is struggling to lift a man, the next she is deadlifting the back of a car. It’s an ok pilot, but I would have loved to see her pushed further than punching Nazi thugs and blocking bullets. Also, the “girl power” message was a little heavy-handed at times. Worth a watch, but not anywhere as awesome as the Gal Gadot Wonder Woman. Story - 12% Characters - 14% Pacing - 15% Spectacle - 13% Entertainment - 13% Total score: 67% Grade scale: 90%-100% = must watch 80%-89% = solid, but could be better 70%-79% = Not terrible, watch if the characters or story interests you 60%-69% = only watch for completionist reasons 0%-59% = just skip it, I find the positives and they don't exist here

  • Blade 2 (2002)

The thing that stuck out the most in this movie was a baby Norman Reedus. He had energy, but still had that grease monkey vibe he is known for. The movie was still stylish as hell but the general plot just didn’t quite feel as good as the first movie. I don't know. The first movie was so good and this took a huge step in the wrong direction. Story - 8% Characters - 15% Pacing - 13% Spectacle - 15% Entertainment - 16% Total score: 67% Grade scale: 90%-100% = must watch 80%-89% = solid, but could be better 70%-79% = Not terrible, watch if the characters or story interests you 60%-69% = only watch for completionist reasons 0%-59% = just skip it, I find the positives and they don't exist here
