- I Saw The Marvels 6 Months Early!!
This won't be posted until the actual movie comes out so I don't break my NDA. However, on June 14th I got to be in a test audience for The Marvels. They were doing it in Dallas and based on the sign-up questions, it was going to be Blue Beetle or a rough cut of The Marvels. It happened to be a rough cut of The Marvels which was interesting to see with the very basic digital filler for the incomplete effects. Pretty much the entire finale was alpha-level CGI. It was enough to give you an idea of what's going on but obviously, we had to fill in the gaps. The movie itself was pretty fun. Carol Danvers seems to be so much more human and natural in her solo films. Kamala was hands down the stand out of the whole thing. She even gets to be the Nick Fury of setting up the Young Avengers. I don't wanna spoil too much but there are some great cameos and plenty of fun scenes. However, I wasn't a huge fan of the villain. All-in-all I loved the movie and the experience. As of right now, my score is: Story-17, Characters-18, Pacing-18, Spectacle-19, Entertainment-18, for a total of 90%. I will put an updated score under this paragraph when the actual movie comes out, so I'll see you then. Updated Scores from the final release Story - 18% Characters - 18% Pacing - 18% Spectacle - 19% Entertainment - 19% Total score: 92%
- Loki Season 2
This season was a bit of a rollercoaster to me. The first season of the show was so freaking good. This season had a very high bar to reach and while at some points I felt it stumbled, it ultimately stuck the landing. It started off strong by introducing Ouroboros and the concept of the loom and all this timeline stuff. There were characters in the TVA that just felt unnecessary to the plot of what this show was doing except to be a hurdle the gang has to stop and get past. Sylvie wasn’t as intriguing this time around but everyone else was on par. It plays with very grand ideas when fiddling with the timelines and that is where this show shines. The final 2 episodes are where the show got me to really bump the rating that could have been way lower. This is Marvel television at its finest and I doubt the fandom will be very divided with this season or the series as a whole. - Clue (1985)
If this movie has one thing, it’s cleverness and attention to detail. The humor was also a nice touch to make the absurdity of the concept work. It was fun and had you guessing the whole way. Even if you saw it in theatres, you may have had a different ending. There were 3 endings and back in the day, you could have gotten any of them. The cast is excellent and gives the movie life. For a movie based on a board game, this was an extremely fun time. - The Expendables 3 (2014)
An even bigger roster with Harrison Ford taking over for Bruce Willis, Wesley Snipes, and the young Avengers. Our baddie this time around is Mel Gibson. This time… it's personal. Always gotta raise the stakes by having the villain be evil because the hero betrayed or abandoned the bad guy in their hour of need. This continues to be a fun action series with great action sequences and cheeky references. Much like its predecessors, it's a stacked cast with lots of guns and explosions. It can feel a bit crowded at times but the climax made sure to give everyone a couple of moments to shine. Definitely worth watching if you are in the mood for a popcorn flick action movie. - Batman: Mask of the Phantasm (1993)
This movie was the first animated DC movie and they came out swinging. It was from the world of Batman: The Animated Series. The backstop origin of his crime-fighting was a nice touch. Everything from the flashback set up the working pieces for the present-day story. It was a little cliche to make the new mystery person someone he has a deep-rooted past with that he hasn't seen in years. Overall I loved the movie. This set the standard for what a solid Batman story should be. It has flaws, but the story itself was told well. - Avengers: Infinity War (2018)
This movie did something I don’t think happens enough in movies…the heroes lost. I’m not gonna lie, when this movie came out I thought the snap would be the last shot but they went for the gut punch of showing the dustings. Thor coming into Wakanda is a nerdy moment that gives me goosebumps and makes me smile ear to ear. This is an amazing movie with Thanos at the center. Only internet trolls can hate this movie. - The Marsh King's Daughter (released 11/3/23)
This is the definition of a psychological thriller. A girl raised, not realizing her father trapped her mother and they were separated from the real world. After starting a whole new life, her father escapes. It is a character study and Daisy Ridley plays the trauma but nostalgia for her childhood well. You can see and feel the conflicted feelings because she grew up one way but learned it never should have happened. The performances are great. It isn’t groundbreaking but feels fresh in its own way. I highly recommend it. - Killers of the Flower Moon (released 10/20/23)
The biggest detractor for this movie is the runtime. The story is fantastic and the runtime is semi-justified since the film covers several years. I guess they realized it had dragged on long enough and did a live radio performance explaining what happened at the end. It was full of drama and great performances. It does get a little gross and violent at times but the whole premise revolves around the murders of the Osage people because they be rich. I admire the story and performance but 3+ hours is rough for a drama. We don’t have that kind of attention span unless it is a sci-fi or fantasy epic. - Freelance (released 10/27/23)
This definitely falls in the mindless action comedy category. It has clever moments here and there but the overall story is generic. The acting is subpar, especially our hero’s estranged wife. It feels like a no-faith action movie that should have been released on a streaming service. It is a shame though because there is star power here with Allison Brie and John Cena. It is predictable and only one thing I thought was going to happen only halfway happened. This is definitely a stream when you are bored one night kind of movie. Not really worth paying for. - The Expendables 2 (2012)
I can’t believe this movie came out the same year as the first Avengers movie. It is starting to dawn on me that these are basically just Avengers movies but it's about the actors and not the characters. They had Chuck Norris and even made a Chuck Norris joke. Remember when those were a thing? There were so many references to famous catchphrases and movies. They even squeaked in an Indiana Jones quote for Harrison Ford even though he wasn’t in it. The roundhouse expert himself, Van Damme, was the villain. Baby Hemsworth was fridged but like the manly version. He was a good kid trying to make some money with his skills for his family. He becomes the reason it becomes personal for the team. Great action and quips. It was a good time all around. - The Expendables (2010)
A beautiful love letter to the genre of action. 80s action if we wanna be more specific. Sylvester Stallone made a testosterone-filled movie with every muscle man from the 80s, 90s, and 2000s. While the story and some dialogue were something a teenager would write, the chemistry and fun can be felt. This movie is the definition of boys being boys. There was decent character development for some of the members as well. This may not be a perfect movie, it is the kind of action you can just turn on and enjoy. - Batman V Dracula (2005)
You don’t really realize the parallels between Dracula and Batman until it is in your face. I do appreciate that Batman was forced to use his brain more than his brawn. Dracula and his turned army were very formidable. There were also a lot of cool visual shots sprinkled in as well. I’d prefer if there was more character development but hero saves the day will have to do. I actually really enjoyed this movie overall. I recommend you check this out if you need a not-scary movie for Halloween. The Joker is honestly the scariest-looking thing in the movie.
