  • Annabelle: Creation (2017)

That poor girl that is in the Shazam movie is typecast as an orphan, I swear. They got a bit more violent with this one and I love it. I like that they put the most innocent people possible in this horrible situation. It was still the usual demonic fair you come to expect from this franchise. I think the cleverest part of this franchise is its ability to be connected with references to other series within the larger franchise. Nothing was groundbreaking about the movie but it fleshed out the universe with a prequel to a prequel. I feel that is all these movies are becoming. It’s an ok movie but I’d still recommend the parent series (The Conjuring) because those just hit better. • The Conjuring 2 (2016)

I actually really liked this one. Nothing like a Nun, a crooked man, and an old man haunting a helpless family. There were some genuine foreshadowed stakes for the Warrens. There was the atmosphere and contrasting moments. This was a well-made movie. It is your usual haunting plot, but at least it keeps it feeling fresh. The Conjuring movies in general seem to be made very well. James Wan does a good job of atmosphere while giving characters some realism. I am starting to see why he is highly praised in the horror community. This one is definitely worth a watch. • The Losers (2010)

The Losers was a comic set during WWII and under the Vertigo branch of DC was revamped into the version that is featured in this movie. The movie itself is a run-of-the-mill action movie. A group of guys who run OPs have a mission go sideways and needs a way to clear their names and get home. They each have their little quirks and have a great family dynamic. There are several action moments that were pretty solid and were a blast to watch. The action and the chemistry between the group is what carries the movie. The bad guy is just a dude who likes to do bad things because it’s fun for him. Very nonchalant about killing people and acts like it's as serious as ordering fries in a drive-thru. There are a lot of top-notch actors like Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Zoe Saldana, Chris Evans, and Idris Elba. I would have loved to see a franchise come out of this. Something in the vein of The Expendables where it’s just a group of guys doing badass things. This is a fun watch and it’s on the short side so it’s good for a quick action movie before bed. • Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017)

This movie found what worked in the first movie and cranked it to 11. This movie is all about the family you find in life and that stuff will make a grown man tear up. The humor was amazing and the stakes were raised from the first movie. This time they were truly saving the whole galaxy against 1 planet-sized enemy. This movie does so much right. • The Creator (Released 9/29/23)

I can’t quite put my finger on it, but something about this movie felt…flat. This should feel like a sci-fi dystopian epic but it just feels like a mix and match of other sci-fi movies. It is Terminator meets The Mandalorian with a splash of District 9. It is essentially another man who is forced into a fatherly role for a kid who can save the world. It definitely had good emotion and light humor. The effects and world-building are solid. I just wish there was more to it. It is basically Star Wars but if it only happened on Earth. Idk, I wanted to like the movie more but it was more just along the lines of OK. If you like AI and Star Wars, then it may be for you but overall it is lacking. Story - 16% Characters - 18% Pacing - 17% Spectacle - 19% Entertainment - 16% Total score: 86% Grade scale: 90%-100% = must watch 80%-89% = solid, but could be better 70%-79% = Not terrible, watch if the characters or story interests you 60%-69% = only watch for completionist reasons 0%-59% = just skip it, I find the positives and they don't exist here

  • Dumb Money (released 9/15/23)

If this movie taught me anything, it’s hindsight is 20/20. If only I had invested in Gamestop when this all happened. The retelling of the meme stock of Gamestop was a rather enjoyable one. They got a bunch of huge name actors in this thing. Dane Dehaan is a fantastic actor and all he played was a freaking Gamestop manager. The Riddler himself played our stock leader. The movie is super funny and never takes itself too seriously. The story moved along at a great pace. Seeing the executives sweat was mmm chefs kiss. This is a really fun way of seeing how the debacle went down. I highly recommend watching it at some point. • Saw X (Released 9/29/23)

I’m going to be real, this movie is really well done and anyone who says differently is dumb. This delivers on stressful, grotesque traps. There are plenty of twists and tension. This does take place between the original and 2. That takes a little bit of the tension away because you know he has to survive a bit longer. It also gives a bit more backstory and focus on Kraemer. There is another familiar face, however, that is a midpoint reveal but I loved it. It won’t be as coveted as the original but it has a great story without the need to feel convoluted. There is also the “Big Pharma is squashing life-changing medicine in favor of life-long treatments” theme thrown in there. Money really is the root of all evil in this world. There is also a fun mid-credits scene that brings back an extra familiar face. If you are a fan of the Saw franchise, definitely watch it. If you aren’t, why are you even reading this? • Annabelle (2014)

This was simply not very good. It had a few exciting scenes but it just felt bland and boring. The atmosphere-to-jumpscare ratio was skewed too far to the jumpscare side. Jump scares are a tool, not a crutch. The characters weren’t super interesting. I would have preferred Annabelle to have a mix of Chucky with mind-game powers thrown in. I just couldn’t get into this one. I had to drag myself to the end. On paper, this isn’t a bad movie. It was just executed like a slow-burn indie horror game. I was disappointed overall. • The Conjuring (2013)

While this film didn’t break much ground in the way of haunting movies, it was made with the proper passion and storytelling. There was a natural build as the haunting became more and more dangerous. Being a possession/haunting movie, I did have a good laugh at the good ole banging their head on something. There was a good balance of scary and giving you a moment to breathe. It definitely could have been scarier, but the cinematography was done very well. It focused on the atmosphere with a few jump scares rather than the other way around. The characters seemed proper for the setting. It’s weird to say but sometimes characters can be too much or not enough at times. The only one that was a little too much was the officer but even he seemed reeled in. The movie passes quickly and never really drags too much. It also started its own mini-horror universe which is neat. I look forward to future installments. • Stardust (2007)

Why did no one tell me to watch this movie sooner!?!?! For those who don’t know, Stardust was a novel written by Neil Gaiman and published by Vertigo which is a subsidiary of DC. The story is a fantasy tale of an average boy who wants to win the heart of a girl in the town. He promises to bring her a fallen star to show his devotion to her hand in marriage. This sets off a grand adventure for our little daredevil. The beauty of this film comes from the wacky characters and the heart behind it all. Not to mention this cast is stacked with early performances of Charlie Cox and Henry Cavill; as well as just legendary actors like Mark Strong, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Robert De Niro. This is a movie I don’t want to go too deep into because this movie deserves to be seen in its pure form. Just know the bully at the beginning of the film is Henry Cavill. The lack of bulging muscles and the addition of a golden brown mustache may throw you off. This truly is a fantasy story full of love, action, witches, royalty, and the willingness to be your best self. Just watch it. Stop reading and go watch it now. Why are you still reading?! GO?! • Logan (2017)

This a beautiful swan song for Logan and Hugh Jackman. My only issue with the movie was how much it dragged. This is Oscarbait level of amazing but boring. The fight scenes were gritty which I loved. The movie as a whole was solid. Just didn’t move fast enough along in my opinion. Story - 19% Characters - 18% Pacing - 14% Spectacle - 18% Entertainment - 16% Total score: 85% Grade scale: 90%-100% = must watch 80%-89% = solid, but could be better 70%-79% = Not terrible, watch if the characters or story interests you 60%-69% = only watch for completionist reasons 0%-59% = just skip it, I find the positives and they don't exist here

  • It Lives Inside (Released 9/22/23)

I’m kinda torn on how I feel about this. It does two things really well. It has diverse casting but in an organic way rather than the woke Hollywood way. The cinematography was actually top-notch. The movie itself, however, felt like a bit of a slugfest until the last 20-30 minutes of the movie. It took the climax happening for me to be interested for more than 30 seconds. The main evil in this movie felt like a Hindi ripoff of The Boogeyman from earlier this year. There was decent foreshadowing but it was a little too on the nose for how it ends. It's an alright movie but a better fit for streaming during the spooky season. Story - 16% Characters - 16% Pacing - 14% Spectacle - 18% Entertainment - 16% Total score: 80% Grade scale: 90%-100% = must watch 80%-89% = solid, but could be better 70%-79% = Not terrible, watch if the characters or story interests you 60%-69% = only watch for completionist reasons 0%-59% = just skip it, I find the positives and they don't exist here
