- Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengence (2012)
The story was kinda bland which is sad because Goyer and Gimple have written incredible scripts. This felt like an underfunded movie which it kinda was. It had half the budget of the first movie. The main reason this scored as high as it did was the stylistic filmmaking. It was over the top and just wild. The directors also did the Crank movies if that's any indication of the cinematography. It’s unnecessary but so interesting to watch. - The Boogeyman (released 6/2/23)
I went for the stressful spooks and was not disappointed. I would never want to be in this family’s shoes. The cinematography was fantastic and there weren't too many unexpected jumpscares. You could see most of them coming a mile away. I love how realistic they played it with the nonbelievers. They would definitely think someone is insane if they saw some shadow demon thing. Everything about this is just right for a horror fan. It even had an open-for-interpretation ending which wasn’t unexpected. Gotta test the waters before you make a franchise. This is a well-balanced horror movie and I hope more horror films that take a serious approach do it like this movie. Less high brow and more just uneasiness. Use the environment, not the camera (unless you are Sam Raimi, he gets a pass). Definitely check this out if you are a horror fan. - Spider-Man: Across the Spiderverse (released 6/2/23)
I don't think something I've been hyped for has exceeded expectations since Endgame. Not only was this the first half of a huge, intense story, but it is also a very personal story. All about doing the right thing versus what is the best thing. There were plenty of jokes but it never pulled the gut punches. Every character felt unique but you saw the core of what makes them spider-people. It never slowed down to a crawl but every intense moment had time to soak in. I gave this bonus points because this is what everyone expected Multiverse of Madness to be. It has cameos and references all over the place but never takes the focus from Miles or Gwen. The animation is next-level and just uniquely, perfectly done. I hope the sequel can match, if not surpass, this movie. This had everything I wanted and more. It is perfection. - Spider-man: Into the Spiderverse (2018)
This is as perfect as a superhero movie can get. There is heart, drama, action, humor, and character growth, all in a visually stunning medium. It was able to be personal and intimate despite being on a very large, grandiose danger scale. Also, the customization of Miles’ suit is awesome. This movie is perfect and everyone gets representation: old, young, male, female, black, white, and Asian. Can’t wait for the MCU iteration of Miles and/or the sequel to this movie. - F9 (2021)
A lot of the drama in these films really stems from Dom’s family. There is Letty, his kid, and now his brother. They are all catalysts for him because his whole thing is family. I do appreciate the characters are starting to realize they survive these insane action scenes because they have plot armor. The self-awareness makes it seem like their luck will run out and end up jinxed. The fact a car is driving in space is pretty insane. We officially reached Saints Row 4 level cray cray. John Cena was a fun addition. He is the better version of the Rock. I said what I said. But the personal story was great and the insanity is always a fun addition. I hope the final movies continue this trend of insane scenes but with personal stakes sprinkled throughout. I don’t think these movies will ever reach my perfect score, but at least they are a fun time! - Jonah Hex (2010)
This movie had a lot going for it, but it felt so hollow. There was a lot of talent on the cast but there were only 3 slightly interesting characters and even they seemed two-dimensional. This movie felt like a Reconstruction Era mix between Wild Wild West and Ghost Rider. Everything about this movie felt flat and generic, but the talent lifted it up a little bit. At the end of the day, it is a simple story about revenge. If they had put more plot and characterizations, then this movie may have done better. It leaves a lot to be desired, but if you want a short western with cool explosions, look no further. - Captain America: The First Avenger (2011)
This movie proved the MCU was going to have range in story. The WWII aesthetic mixed with the idealistic version of patriotism makes you feel patriotic for like 5 seconds. The story is for the little guys. They can achieve great things if they are given the chance. This movie is amazing and is the forgotten decade old movie that introduced the badass that is Captain America. - About My Father (releases 5/26/23)
This movie isn't bad, but it felt like your run-of-the-mill "meet the dysfunctional family" rom-com. There were some genuine funny moments and the twist towards the end was good but barely changed a thing. This is perfect for a casual date night. Most of the side characters are very one-note but the main characters are pretty relatable. This movie is nothing fancy and worth an afternoon date or a night in when it hits streaming. It's very middle of the road for what it is. - The Little Mermaid (released 5/26/23)
I was today years old when I released The Little Mermaid is a fish out of water story. The movie was meh and as far as my memory of the original goes, it is fairly close like the other reimaginings. I really want to gripe about the CGI. I get underwater is difficult to do but Aquaman did it slightly better. The final Ursula battle was downright ugly looking. The stuff on land was much more enjoyable because there was more practicality to it. Scuttle and Ursula were the most entertaining characters. Ariel had an amazing voice. Everyone else was meh. In all honesty, just watch the animated movie. These reboots are unnecessary and look terrible from the uncanny valley. - The Machine (released 5/26/23)
This movie was actually better than I expected. I thought it was just going to be this ridiculous action comedy, which it was. But it actually took time to allow for character moments and actually make meaningful arcs. If the whole movie wasn’t so over-the-top and ridiculous, there may have been moments towards the end that would make you cry in a straight drama. The fighting was actually good and at some spots was as good as the John Wick choreography. There was also the perfect amount of gore as well. Nothing too crazy, just a throat slice and beheading here and there. I actually genuinely had a fun time with this movie and highly recommend seeing it. Everything about it was executed as well as it could be. He’s the motherflipping MACHINE!!! - Hobbs and Shaw (2019)
This movie was way too generic. It also showed how much power The Rock was starting to develop in Hollywood. There were also cameos that stuck out like a sore thumb. They were fun cameos but sidetracked the movie. The plot is a basic countdown for a virus to kill someone. I also found the midpoint scene felt too much like the climax and I was lowkey sad to see over an hour left in the movie. I thought the pace was going fast but apparently not. I think Jason Statham is an underappreciated action star. He has star power but you don’t remember he exists until he pops up in the movie. Idris Elba was a pretty solid villain and you felt some sympathy for him being a robocop. The director did movies like Bullet Train and Deadpool 2 so it had some of those signature quick beats and utilized humor. I personally didn’t like this film, but if you want a mindless action movie that is a slightly smaller scale than its mother franchise, check it out. - The Fate of the Furious (2017)
I really liked this one. The betrayal of the team’s leader. The stakes and mystery of why he is even doing it. The villain is still a little too mustache twirly for my liking but you need a big bad. The set pieces and everything else continues to get more insane. This movie managed to take the insanity they have perfected and put in a stressful heartache of a story and motivation for Dom. These movies crossing the two-hour mark does get felt, but this one is still a great time. I hope to see Cipher’s story get deepened and more fleshed out going forward. It is hard to hate these movies. Some are better than others, but you know what you are getting and they have been solid since the fourth movie.
