  • The Fast and The Furious (2001)

Full disclosure, this is my first time properly watching any of the movies. I remember when I was a kid watching these as something in the background or at a sleepover. I honestly only remembered these movies being about cars. I did not realize there was a whole FBI investigation thing going on. I was not at that age where I comprehended movies yet apparently. Anyways, so the movie is pretty solid. There were a lot of cool cars and introduced some great characters. The story felt very run-of-the-mill for a 2001 action flick. It never really felt dragged out at any point. The camera work, especially during the races, made it almost feel like a video game with the distortion warping from the speed. Granted, games in 2001 were still blocky mush but the comparison still stands. I think this is a good introduction to a world that will build over many decades. This seems to be like James Bond where in theory it will go on forever and just swap characters as needed. • Book Club (2018)

There is something fascinating about the “Golden Girls” genre. A group of old ladies decides to stop with their normal routine and try to recapture their youthful, fun spirit. This is basically that. After reading 50 Shades of Grey, these ladies have a sexual reawakening…which is an uncomfortable sentence to write. They are mature ladies and can do what they please. I just don’t need the images in my head. Anyway, it goes about how you expect. Things go well. Everything is fresh and new. They freak out and cause an end-of-act 2 problem. It all gets resolved after they have an emergency freakout meeting. It is just one of those heartwarming dramedies. If you are of the older variety, this will be up your alley. I’ll stick to the Sandra Bullock Rom-Com movies. • Batman Begins (2005)

Drama! Foreshadowing! Symbolism! This took a very detailed, dramatic tearing apart of the Batman character. I personally never loved this entry because of the back and forth for the origin. This is the first DC movie that was taken seriously and it came out very well. This is a well-made movie, but it just didn't feel quite close enough to a superhero movie. It’s a solid entry and set DC on the right track after over a decade of subpar movies. • Punisher: Warzone (2008)

This movie would have scored way lower had it not had a few decent action pieces. Every character was either flat or over the top with no inbetween. The emotional moments felt weird. Frank looked like a mobster villain rather than an anti-hero seeking vengeance. This movie was hard to watch and I nearly turned it off. Just pretend this doesn’t exist and watch the Defenders Saga series. It has everything you want from a Punisher adaptation. • To Catch A Killer (released 4/21/23)

This was more of a statement piece than a full-fledged crime thriller. There were heavy references to the arguments involving guns, as well as mental health. The premise is someone with brain damage decides to kill innocent, random people. The news and radio argue about the accessibility and over-purchasing of guns. The plot itself just serves as a way to tell the story of a damaged killer. The conclusions by the protagonists are kind of lucky jumps that keep the story going. The good guys have their own issues like a cop who has been a drug abuser and a cutter, and a chief that bends the knee to the bureaucracy rather than doing the correct thing. It's ok to have flaws but they literally compare the main cop to a criminal psychologically. It was an ok movie that just coasts on the mystery of who could kill so precisely but randomly at the same time. Maybe catch this one on streaming down the line. • Guy Ritchie's The Covenant (released 4/21/23)

This was a much better movie than I anticipated. The premise is essentially this interpreter in Afghanistan brought a wounded soldier over 100 miles of rough terrain with the Taliban on their heels. The soldier was thankful and made his next mission to get the interpreter and his family safely to the US and away from the Taliban which had a price for both their heads. It's a great story of honesty and perseverance. You always became terrified every time a Taliban truck came around which was very often. It is intense in terms of action and the "will they survive this?" I especially praise Jake Gyllenhaal and Dar Salim for their unreal performances. You could see the stress and pain the characters went through in these horrible circumstances. This is a well-made film and should be seen at some point. A side note: While this is not a biopic, it was based on the real issue of how things worked out for interpreters during the US time in Afghanistan and their eventual departure. • Evil Dead Rise (released 4/21/23)

The filmmakers understood the assignment. Obviously, Sam Raimi was probably a heavily involved producer, but this hit every mark you would expect from an Evil Dead film. It was a breath of fresh air to make the setting a terrible apartment rather than a cabin, even though it starts at a lakehouse cabin. The movie also did a nice full circle with how it got to the opening scene. The characters all felt unique and like real people with mundane lives. The traditions were all here: shotguns, chainsaws, gallons of blood, the POV track camera, and the Book of the Dead. I do wish this was a little scarier though. It grossed me out plenty, but I wasn’t scared all that much. It was a well-made Evil Dead movie though. I just wish people in these movies would stop seeing creepy things and mess with it rather than leaving it alone. I guess then we wouldn’t have a movie. I just hate how dumb these people are sometimes. I definitely recommend you see this in theatres. Just try not to be next to people who make comments anytime something happens. • The Evil Dead (2013)

It is hard to judge this movie properly. It does a great job of making realistic horror gore, but the low-budget look of the classics had its charm. They did manage to out-blood the previous movies by making it literally rain blood. So that’s neat. The story and characters all felt too generic horror and weren’t really interesting. There isn’t anyone I’m really rooting for because they are all self-centered and only try to do what they want. There are a lot of homages to the original films which were welcome and its biggest saving grace. They even threw in the super shot through the woods effect. The movie itself felt flat, but it tried to modernize a unique classic in a fresh way. I would be curious to see how the originally planned sequel with Ash would have played out. Sadly, the stars never aligned. If you want a run-of-the-mill modern horror film with some of the Evil Dead flair, then give it a watch. It is not a must-watch, but it is a decent time if you love horror. • Evil Dead: Army of Darkness (1992)

This film feels very disconnected from the other movies in the franchise. It has the book and monsters but it just doesn’t feel scary. It is one big Monty Python/Three Stooges movie with some horror things slapped on it. It is by no means terrible but it just feels awkward. Ash also seems way too overconfident. Whether you count the first movie or not, this trilogy takes place over the course of like 3 or 4 days max depending on how long he was in medieval times. He can’t go from a casual, laid-back guy to this badass, ladies-man hero. Just feels like a big jump in each movie. It still has similar cinematography and style at least. It rounds out the original story, but it won’t quench that horror tick like the previous entries. Decent, but not the best. • Constantine (2005)

I 100% prefer the arrowverse version of the character. Keanu Reeves is a great actor but the dynamics of his emotional range are a bit more limited. This felt like a John Wick meets Blade kind of story. It’s a fun enough watch, and worth atleast one watch. Shia Lebouf was in the movie too which I initially didn’t catch at first. This was a fine dip in the religious side of DC, but had much left to be desired. Story - 15% Characters - 14% Pacing - 14% Spectacle - 14% Entertainment - 15% Total score: 72% Grade scale: 90%-100% = must watch 80%-89% = solid, but could be better 70%-79% = Not terrible, watch if the characters or story interests you 60%-69% = only watch for completionist reasons 0%-59% = just skip it, I find the positives and they don't exist here

  • The Incredible Hulk (2008)

This movie is fun as hell and seeing Hulk do his thing is wonderful. It fell short story wise for me. I’m glad that they translated Hulks powers better. This movie is a classic “The government screwed up so they try to fix it and make it worse”. Bruce genuinely wanted out but the Government wants the bigger stick against the world. This movie is often forgotten and is rarely referenced anymore. There are some stand out actors in this, but it wasn't enough to elevate the movie. It's a great time if you want hulk smashing. Sadly, the story is run-of-the-mill and a retread of sorts of the 2003 movie. I still love both, though. Story - 14% Characters - 12% Pacing - 14% Spectacle - 16% Entertainment - 15% Total score: 71% Grade scale: 90%-100% = must watch 80%-89% = solid, but could be better 70%-79% = Not terrible, watch if the characters or story interests you 60%-69% = only watch for completionist reasons 0%-59% = just skip it, I find the positives and they don't exist here

  • The Pope's Exorcist (released 4/14/23)

I guess the key to defeating demons are prayer and humor. This movie was actually kind of surprising as to how fun it was. Russell Crowe carries the film with not just his humor but the ability to be the perfect amount of seriousness when the need calls for it. The other priest's naiveness helped make him the ideal counterbalance. The family however felt like plot devices more than fleshed-out characters. They seemed very one-note and mostly uninteresting. The daughter's punk attitude was fun at times though. It is a very run-of-the-mill exorcist film but tries to add its own lore and even points out mental health vs possession in victims. They even left the door open for the film to be a series with an almost Men in Black feel, just with priests and demons rather than agents and aliens. If they go that route, hopefully, there are quirky special powers for each demon to keep it fresh. The pacing was ok. The family is so bland you just want to follow Crowe's character. Some of the effects had mid-2000s level quality which could have been a budget thing. There was one eye effect that looked really dope though. If you want an exorcist movie with an infectiously entertaining lead, then go check this out.
