- Renfield (released 4/14/23)
This movie had no right to be as amazing as it is. The cast is phenomenal. The action and humor keep everything going at a beautiful pace. The trailers were pretty spot on for what to expect. Nick Cage got to unleash the insane menace that we love. The thing I was not ready for was the unapologetic gory moments. It felt like a Deadpool movie but with Dracula instead of mutants. Plenty of corrupt cops to make it hard for the main character to get anything done. This is just a fun ride and needs to be seen asap. - Mafia Mamma (released 4/14/23)
I knew this was gonna be a comedy going in but this comedy felt off. It's the kind of humor you would almost expect from a decently done parody. I guess it is trying to be the Godfather but with an incredibly lucky woman. Lots of coincidence moments that can only be achieved with lady luck...or the story just wills it. The plot is fine. The trailers sum up the first portion of the movie. The only thing that was unexpected was it turning the mafia businesses into a better version of themselves. She desperately tries to remain a good person during a mafia war. Some of the characters like Bianca were fun but others are fairly bland and one note. I would have liked to see more out of the characters, especially the bodyguards. I felt a little bored so I did check my watch a couple of times. It was an ok comedy that could have been much better. If the premise intrigues you, by all means, go see it. If not, maybe wait for streaming. - Evil Dead 2 (1987)
Sam, do you want to lean into the horror or lean into the humor?... Yes! This go-round is a bit more focused than the first film. It resets how Ash got to that point in the story then picks it up with the last shot of the first movie. It leans a lot more into a Three Stooges-style slapstick humor. On the same token, they definitely upped the fake blood budget. It was like the Kid’s Choice Awards but with a red goo rather than green. The backstory for the Book of the Dead was expanded and actually shows more of what the book contains. The whole movie felt more polished but still had the Raimi-isms going full force. It’s clear they had more of a plan, while also allowing Bruce Campbell to go as off the rails as he wanted. This is a fun movie that grew the story and lore while setting up at least one more movie. As with all evil things, they will continue even after they are expelled from the world. It’s made to where you can pick up here or start off with the first movie. The ball is in your court, but these are cult classics for a reason. - Evil Dead (1981)
By today’s standards, this movie is laughable and not super scary outside of jumpscares. The thing that made this a cult classic was the unapologetic gore and effects. This movie also solidified the Raimi-isms that Sam Raimi is known for. While not the first movie to do the “cabin in the woods” setting, it made it what it is today. There was a lot of effort put into a movie with such a small budget and inexperienced production. It never really overstays its welcome and does cheesy 80s horror to perfection. Try not to eat anything while you watch it because gore and prosthetics will make you lose your appetite. While doing some research I also learned a lot of the scenes were created on the fly. Obviously, there was a narrative and ideas going in but a lot of stuff was done by winging it. This is a must-watch for any horror fan. Also, RIP the coochie of the woman assaulted by a tree. Yes, that is an actual scene in this movie. As I said, the movie was unapologetic and in most markets received an NC-17 or full-on X rating. So maybe don’t watch this with the kids. It would probably be a basic R rating today but ya. Give it a watch! - Catwoman (2004)
I know, I’m shocked it’s this high, too. The movie has its…let’s say quirks. It was very similar to Daredevil in a lot of ways. From the soundtrack to the sketchy CGI/physics. It is obviously coming out of the early 2000s. We are totally here for the plot and not Halle Berry in a fine leather number, right?... Right?! Jokes aside, this movie is actually pretty fun if you just want a mindless action movie. It’s a fun movie that you shouldn’t take seriously. Just enjoy it for what it is. It has cats soooo…worth a watch! - Iron Man (2008)
This is the movie that kicked off the MCU and gave it the footing it needed. It's a great story about a man whose creation has been put in the hands of the wrong people. This causes him to be the change. He becomes...Iron Man. For a half-baked script, they really pulled off something spectacular. Not everything landed but this proved to be a huge success for the studio that had one shot to prove they were something special. It introduced great characters with even better castings. The movie is a fun ride and set the precedent for what was to come from the MCU. This is not the best movie in the MCU but it is the most important one. Without this movie succeeding, the Avengers never would have come to fruition and the MCU juggernaut could have been dead on arrival. This movie is always worth the watch. - A Good Person (released 3/24/23)
It was hard to find a showing of this movie. I was actually super excited to see a drama featuring Florence Pugh and Morgan Freeman. This film was a very raw and emotional ride. It touches on the ideas of grief, addiction, and trying to move on. There were moments that I forgot I was watching a movie. Instead, I was feeling the same emotional weight as the characters. Everyone in the film handles their pain differently. But it all tied to one event that broke everyone. There were a handful of humorous moments that took the weight off for a moment, but never lets it weigh down the movie. Some scenes are drawn out but they serve the greater purpose of the story. I genuinely loved this movie and Highly recommend it. There is a fair amount of drug and alcohol abuse so if that is triggering or too real, maybe pass on it. Its a movie meant to make you feel human. We can all fall off the deep end for one reason or another. We just have to do our best to pick ourselves up, no matter how long it takes. - Paint (released 4/5/23)
I'm gonna be real, this was a very weird movie. Owen Wilson plays this Bob Ross knockoff. There are a lot of sex jokes, mostly with all women wanting to be with him. But of course, it never fills the hole left in his heart by his one true love. The comedy comes off as almost British in nature. I can't quite explain it. The humor was if Family Guy, The Office, and a British comedy had a baby about a knockoff Bob Ross, this would be it. There were too many oddball characters for anyone to truly stand out. The story is basically just a PBS station trying to save itself from being shut down due to budget cuts. There are weird romance plots that were just odd. I had a few chuckles, but the only joke that made me genuinely laugh was when a girl gets it on with a delivery driver in his truck. There are 2 quick squeaks from outside the truck and then she comes out. It's a weird mess, that had a handful of emotional moments. I didn't hate my experience. If you like Owen Wilson and feel a comedy, this might be for you. Other than that, maybe wait for it to be rentable. - Air (released 4/5/23)
This movie was a much more fun time than I expected. This movie is a biopic about how the famous Air Jordans came to be. The cast was all fantastic with Matt Damon as the spearhead. You can't have a Matt Damon drama without his bestie Ben Affleck. The actor playing Michael Jordan didn't have a single line and played very stand-offish when in the meeting with all the companies. The movie had a fun, humorous quality to it. It seemed like everyone was genuinely having fun while trying to show a very serious, dangerous time in Nike's history. Being a biopic, there were probably creative liberties taken for the purpose of drama. It was a steady-moving pace. I never really got bored at any point. They also gave the whole film a washed-out quality to give it a more 80s feel. Everything was still sharp so it was probably a post-production thing rather than using real 80s film cameras. If you want a fun movie that tells the tale of how Air Jordans came to be, this is definitely worth a watch. - The Super Mario Bros Movie (released 4/5/23)
This is exactly what I wanted from a Mario movie. If you are a fan of Mario in the slightest, go see this movie. If you have kids, go see this movie. If you don't meet these criteria, you probably won't like this movie. The plot is very basic, but it is perfectly simple for a kid audience. It's vibrant and there are so many moments that will make fans of any Mario game gush. I walked away from this movie so satisfied. I genuinely don't get why so many articles are bashing this movie. It is a simple story for kids (including motivations and character arcs) and injects enough gaming nostalgia to feed the appetite of any Mario fan no matter the generation. There is nothing I would change about this movie honestly. It is 100% what you expect from a Mario movie aimed at kids and fans. - John Wick Chapter 3 - Parabellum (2019)
The John Wick movies are consistent as hell. Each movie grows the universe a little bit. Each movie lightly tops the action from the previous movie. Is it just me or were there a lot more crotch hits than in the previous movies? Knives, bullets, kicks, dog bites, and so much more attack the male genitals. I honestly thought the movie was going to be two hours of John fighting waves of assassins and pulling every favor to survive. Thankfully, It actually keeps the world growing and keeps dangling little outs for John to stop being hunted. It also continues to show the respect the organization has for John. It’s a little bigger but keeps everything that makes the series a great action franchise. It is crazy to think this all started because Theon stole John’s car and killed his dog. Literally, dozens, if not hundreds, of people would be alive if one person wasn’t dumb. John goes to war this time and it is everything you need. - John Wick Chapter 2 (2017)
I did not plan on giving this movie the same exact score as the original but here we are. John can’t catch a break. He ties up the loose ends from the first movie and is ready to chill out again. Of course, some idiot wants to drag him in and force him to do his assassin thing. It kept that similar serious mixed with cheeky moments. The way everyone casually knows everyone is still the funniest aspect of this movie. It does a great job of expanding the world and showing that the bureau reaches far and wide. Anyone can be a member and you’d never know it. The action is impeccable and the mirror section was trippy and confusing but in a good way. Needing to reload guns continues to be very realistic in this film. When he is out of ammo, he improvizes! This series continues to be a fun action film saga with not a lot to complain about. Non-action scenes do drag a bit at times, but it’s not bad enough to complain about. Keanu Reeves is the gift that keeps on giving. Definitely worth the watch.
