  • Knives Out (2019)

This is a beautifully crafted murder mystery. The moral of the story is rich people are the freaking worst. The casting was great. The attention to detail was fantastic. There isn’t much I would change. It’s clever and fun. Even when things are laid out in front of you, they may not be what they seem. Rian Johnson did a great job and I hope this franchise goes on for years to come. Story - 19% Characters - 19% Pacing - 18% Spectacle - 17% Entertainment - 19% Total score: 92% Grade scale: 90%-100% = must watch 80%-89% = solid, but could be better 70%-79% = Not terrible, watch if the characters or story interests you 60%-69% = only watch for completionist reasons 0%-59% = just skip it, I find the positives and they don't exist here

  • Batman: Mystery of the Batwoman (2003)

The mystery of the title character was done really well. It isn’t as cut and dry as one is led to believe. The story is a huge step up. They had slapstick when it was appropriate. The action in general was very well done. The climax was exciting and had me on the edge of my seat. The story itself is pretty basic but the action more than makes up for it. There is also a silent short after the credits that was a nice surprise. It was fun and spoke a thousand words with just facial expressions and reactions. This was a fun watch. • Ant-Man and The Wasp (2018)

There isn't too much to say about this one. It was similar to the first one but with heart and action ramped up a couple of notches. It’s a fun, family-focused movie and a nice palette cleanser after Infinity War. Story - 17% Characters - 18% Pacing - 18% Spectacle - 17% Entertainment - 18% Total score: 88% Grade scale: 90%-100% = must watch 80%-89% = solid, but could be better 70%-79% = Not terrible, watch if the characters or story interests you 60%-69% = only watch for completionist reasons 0%-59% = just skip it, I find the positives and they don't exist here

  • Trolls: Band Together (Released 11/17/23)

There is an acid trip clip that was wild to see in 3-D. I didn’t want to see it in 3-D, that was just the showing at the time I wanted to go. This is a very cute kids' movie that has a focus on siblings. Standing up to them in some cases and being there when you haven’t in others. The soundtrack is so freaking good. I also loved the boy band references throughout the movie. *NSYNC is also in the movie with a new song…as trolls of course. It is just a fun movie to bop to. Story - 18% Characters - 18% Pacing - 17% Spectacle - 19% Entertainment - 18% Total score: 90% Grade scale: 90%-100% = must watch 80%-89% = solid, but could be better 70%-79% = Not terrible, watch if the characters or story interests you 60%-69% = only watch for completionist reasons 0%-59% = just skip it, I find the positives and they don't exist here

  • Hunger Games: A Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes (released 11/17/23)

I read the book recently before seeing the movie. I know that's dangerous because books have the time for nuance. A nearly 500-page book condensed into a 2.5-hour movie is going to be hard. I do appreciate a movie with obvious themes. There is a big focus on the brutality of man and how when backed in a corner, we become savages. This is true in a literal and metaphorical sense. I think the movie did a great job of selling the characters as they are in the book. Viola Davis’ character was a Disney villain performance wise which is fair considering how evil she can be. The southern drawl of Lucy Gray was a little distracting. Beautiful singing voice but it's a bit much. I imagined her band being more southern sounding but not so much Lucy. It does rush through several moments from the book, barely giving them an explanation. Which again, is because the book has the time for the finer details. It felt true to the book, but like many adaptations never felt a perfect 1 to 1. • Death On The Nile (2022)

This outing felt like it could have been done much better. It was slow to get to the murder and never felt that exciting. The whodunit was so obvious you almost don’t even consider it an option. The movie was just a mess and didn’t have the creativity of the first film or the unique style of A Haunting in Venice. Everything about it felt off. I personally would skip this one unless you are doing a binge of these movies. • A Murder on the Orient Express (2017)

The first in a fresh retelling of Agatha Christie’s classic stories. This one in particular has at least half a dozen productions. The star-studded cast was phenomenal and really fell into their characters. I wasn’t looking at Rey Skywalker or Green Goblin, I was looking at genuine characters. The mystery can be solved in the first 20-30 minutes if you pay attention to some dialogue. Hercule Poirot is as eccentric as they come but he is good at what he does. This is a fine start to the franchise. Not quite as fun or witty as Knives Out but still a great time. • Batman and Mr. Freeze: Sub-Zero (1998)

Fun fact: This was supposed to be a tie-in to the Batman and Robin live-action movie. This took the same characters from the animated show and did their own spin on the Freeze story. Mr. Freeze is the definition of a sympathetic character. He only does bad things in an effort to cure his beloved. The movie overall is okay. It hit all the key points you’d expect in a Batman outing. It also ended in a weirdly positive way. This is nothing special but it is always a blast to hear Kevin Conroy do his thing. Story - 16% Characters - 17% Pacing - 16% Spectacle - 15% Entertainment - 15% Total score: 79% Grade scale: 90%-100% = must watch 80%-89% = solid, but could be better 70%-79% = Not terrible, watch if the characters or story interests you 60%-69% = only watch for completionist reasons 0%-59% = just skip it, I find the positives and they don't exist here

  • Deadpool 2 (2018)

This is a fun movie but it doesn’t hit quite the same as the first. They fridged Venessa which sucked. Cable, Domino, and Yukio were all fantastic additions to the cast. The climax had a lot more emotion too, even though they overdid the Deadpool humor when he “died”. There is a lot to like but the bigger budget took away from some of the charm. The first movie is superior, but this one is still solid. Story - 16% Characters - 18% Pacing - 18% Spectacle - 18% Entertainment - 18% Total score: 88% Grade scale: 90%-100% = must watch 80%-89% = solid, but could be better 70%-79% = Not terrible, watch if the characters or story interests you 60%-69% = only watch for completionist reasons 0%-59% = just skip it, I find the positives and they don't exist here

  • Next Goal Wins (Released 11/17/23)

Taika Waititi is at his best when he does comedic stories. The story of American Samoa’s Soccer team was full of heartwarming moments with fun elements. There are themes of tradition and acceptance of others. Michael Fassbender did an amazing job and pulled off both the comedy side and drama side so well. It has a fairly happy ending for the underdogs. It is a fun sports movie with some moving drama moments. There is perfect balance and leads to this being a fairly solid movie.

  • The Holdovers (Released 10/27/23)

You can kind of expect where this goes based on the trailers. A student and a teacher are at odds but over the course of the Christmas break, they learn to respect each other. They both have flaws and in general, have a lot of character parallels. The humor is very spot-on and done well. It gets emotional when it needs to as well. The movie is a little on the long side but is paced well enough to feel like the runtime rather than longer. It is heartwarming and the performances are magical. Definitely recommend this, especially as a holiday film. Story - 20% Characters - 20% Pacing - 17% Spectacle - 16% Entertainment - 18% Total score: 91% Grade scale: 90%-100% = must watch 80%-89% = solid, but could be better 70%-79% = Not terrible, watch if the characters or story interests you 60%-69% = only watch for completionist reasons 0%-59% = just skip it, I find the positives and they don't exist here

  • The Marvels (Released 11/10/23)

This feels like a more true-to-form Marvel movie. The fact a newcomer steals the show over Captain Marvel is working for and against it. Kamala and Monica being involved humanizes Carol a bit because in her eyes she sees 2 kids: one from 30ish years ago and a newcomer that is obsessed with her. Kamala’s family is great as always and a key part of the humorous side of the film. Giving Brie Larson a singing section was a great choice as she is a pretty good artist. The villain definitely feels like a Ronin copycat who just feels like the opposite end of the spectrum in goals but the same in achieving them. Both want a powerful artifact to do something for the Kree. This time around the goal is to save a planet of Kree people Carol unknowingly doomed when she destroyed the Central Intelligence. The action is great and the future movie setups for Kamala and Monica are great and exciting. Carol just kinda chills on Earth at the end until they need her in a 3rd movie or an Avengers movie. It’s shorter but that means no fluff. It is a great time. Story - 18% Characters - 18% Pacing - 18% Spectacle - 19% Entertainment - 19% Total score: 92% Grade scale: 90%-100% = must watch 80%-89% = solid, but could be better 70%-79% = Not terrible, watch if the characters or story interests you 60%-69% = only watch for completionist reasons 0%-59% = just skip it, I find the positives and they don't exist here
