  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle II: The Secret of the Ooze (1991)

They went a little cartoonish with this one. There was a bit of expansion on the lore of the turtles becoming mutants but that is where the growth ends. The turtles don’t learn much. April doesn’t do much. It’s still a fun movie but just didn't do much past the ooze. Off-brand Bebop and Rocksteady were meh. Super Shredder was defeated easier than normal Shredder. This movie is only worth watching to get the full original trilogy experience. Otherwise, you can just stick with the first film. • Zack Snyder's Justice League (2021)

The fans spoke and WB said “Eh, why not? We need subs.” I still stand behind the fact Wonder Woman movie coming out before Justice League makes the weight of Diana whining about Steve seem less blah. It is kinda dumb they were together for a few weeks at most and she is still hung up on him like a century later. I digress. This movie took its time setting up the Flash and Cyborg a bit better. The Flash’s big moment in the climax is super emotional in my opinion. I do feel like Aquaman was more there to fill out the roster. There were a few unimportant moments that dragged on a little too long. All in all, this version actually hyped up the heroes' next team-up to fight Darkseid. This had a lot more Snyderisms and that's kinda what you want in a universe that he kicked off. I’m definitely sad this iteration won’t get the proper resolution it deserves, but I am excited for what DC brings in their hard reset. • Fant4stic (2015)

Sooo if you told me the Fantastic Four characters went into the public domain and an indie filmmaker took the reigns, this is what I’d expect. When I was trying to figure out the vibe, it was giving me Chronicle and Project Almanac vibes. Guess what, the director also made Chronicle. This movie has an asterisk by the score because I scored this as a movie and not a Marvel film like everything else in this category. Take out the comic book names and you have a knockoff, gritty Fantastic Four. Literally just change the title, character names, and tweak the powers and you have Chronicle 2. As a film, it's enjoyable enough. As a Marvel movie, they besmirched the name of the first family. • Talk to Me (released 7/28/23)

This wasn’t originally on my watch list but I had been hearing good things about it. It is by A24 which is a bit more arthouse but they usually go for the uncomfortable, twisted horror rather than the fun, popcorn horror of Blumhouse. The premise is about these teens that have a cursed hand mold that may or may not have a real witch hand inside. If you hold the hand and say “Talk to me” then you see a dead person. If you say “I let you in” then they can possess you until you release the hand and blow out the candle. The whole thing goes off the rails and gives us the movie. It is a very get-in, get-out kind of movie. It has a 90-minute runtime and focuses on the “game” followed by the repercussions. I loved the unique premise, but the fact they kept doing it like it was a drug and not lost spirits wanting to escape or claim victims is dumb. The premise is good, the kids are stupid beyond belief. Definitely worth checking out. • Strays (released 8/18/23)

I have mixed feelings about this one. If you turn on your 12-year-old brain, this movie is amazing. If you turn on your adult brain, it’s a bit much. This was written like every character was clueless as to how messed up the things they were saying were. I do see the comedy in that but it never stops. It is an ok movie but it may as well be an old-school Blink-182 in-between-songs comedy bit. It has some funny moments but maybe save this one for streaming. • Gran Turismo (released 8/25/23)

I got good vibes from the movie’s trailers but it was a better experience than I expected. The movie is based on the real story of a kid who was really good at the game Gran Turismo, who got the chance to race for real. It was a very emotional movie. There were unexpected, tense moments. I’m glad it didn’t do the usual fame goes to their head bit. The movie is about a kid who loves racing and the money/fame is just the cherry on top. The visual effects aren't perfect, especially with anything involving fire. But there were some really cool shots sprinkled in there. It has a longer runtime but it never drags or gets bogged down. It is the best version of this movie that could be released. • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle (1990)

This is a cheesy delight. The only downfall is the serious moments are undermined by the humor so they don’t hit. That being said, this is awesome even for being a product of the time. Nothing beats 4 dudes in a rubber suit skateboarding and fighting. This is a timeless childhood classic and needs to be seen by everyone of all ages. The ninja/karate phase was in full swing around this time with the likes of Karate Kid and 3 Ninjas. I miss the simpler times. Go find this somewhere and give it a watch. Story - 17% Characters - 18% Pacing - 17% Spectacle - 17% Entertainment - 18% Total score: 87% Grade scale: 90%-100% = must watch 80%-89% = solid, but could be better 70%-79% = Not terrible, watch if the characters or story interests you 60%-69% = only watch for completionist reasons 0%-59% = just skip it, I find the positives and they don't exist here

  • Mission Impossible: Fallout (2018)

The middle part of this movie was bland but the climax was perfect. A time limit with impossible odds. Henry Cavill is fantastic as always. This was the first Mission Impossible to get me in the feels at all. This is Mission Impossible in its top form. Where do they go now to increase spectacle and action? I have no idea. It would be nice if the threat wasn’t nukes again. I could do with a personal vendetta or something more tech-based as the ultimate threat. This is a fine movie but the runtime should have been trimmed up a bit. I think 10-15 minutes off would have been perfect. This hits all the checkmarks it needs and I hope it continues to improve. • Wonder Woman 1984 (2020)

This movie was an odd choice to take Wonder Woman. They shoehorned in a way to bring in Steve Trevor in the oddest way possible. Wonder Woman can somewhat fly now. The main villain becomes a living monkey paw (in the comics he can mind-control people). Kristen Wiig is a doll, but her character is bringing back Electro vibes from The Amazing Spider-man 2. It sends a good message of being thankful for what you have and living the truth. It was a very meh movie overall. It’s not bad, so if you like the Wonder Woman character it's an okay watch. Story - 16% Characters - 14% Pacing - 16% Spectacle - 16% Entertainment - 16% Total score: 78% Grade scale: 90%-100% = must watch 80%-89% = solid, but could be better 70%-79% = Not terrible, watch if the characters or story interests you 60%-69% = only watch for completionist reasons 0%-59% = just skip it, I find the positives and they don't exist here

  • Ant-Man (2015)

This movie definitely comes off as a palate cleanser after the high stakes of Age of Ultron. It's stylish and the characters are all a treasure. I will say this movie continued the Phase 2 trend of decent stories with weak villains. They did a lot of cool things in this one with perspective. This movie is worth the watch because of Paul Rudd alone. Story - 16% Characters - 17% Pacing - 18% Spectacle - 17% Entertainment - 18% Total score: 86% Grade scale: 90%-100% = must watch 80%-89% = solid, but could be better 70%-79% = Not terrible, watch if the characters or story interests you 60%-69% = only watch for completionist reasons 0%-59% = just skip it, I find the positives and they don't exist here

  • Blue Beetle (released 8/18/23)

I feel like I compare DC movies to Marvel but never the other way around. Not sure if that is good or bad yet. This feels like Stark Suit spidey, with the family of Ms. Marvel, and the general world of The Avengers video game. It never felt like it was trying to do its own thing. It was just following similar beats to other things. The villain is too soap opera mustache twirly. No depth, just bad because money. The family dynamic is the strongest part of the movie, but Shazam! already did that. This is a safe movie so it never feels like a bad movie, but on the same token, it doesn’t feel like a groundbreaking movie. I was hoping for more, but it didn’t live up to its full potential. Story - 15% Characters - 18% Pacing - 17% Spectacle - 17% Entertainment - 17% Total score: 84% Grade scale: 90%-100% = must watch 80%-89% = solid, but could be better 70%-79% = Not terrible, watch if the characters or story interests you 60%-69% = only watch for completionist reasons 0%-59% = just skip it, I find the positives and they don't exist here

  • Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation (2015)

Jeremy Renner had the best running joke in this movie. I haven’t laughed so hard at a full-circle joke in my life. This is pretty par for the course in this franchise. It is like the Fast and Furious franchise in its suspension of disbelief. This time around Ethan and his crew are on their own with IMF disbanded. They do their impossible thing to take down a villainous organization. Not much in the way of character growth but it has fun characters and set pieces. They definitely know what the people want. Definitely worth a watch though. Story - 17% Characters - 18% Pacing - 17% Spectacle - 17% Entertainment - 17% Total score: 86% Grade scale: 90%-100% = must watch 80%-89% = solid, but could be better 70%-79% = Not terrible, watch if the characters or story interests you 60%-69% = only watch for completionist reasons 0%-59% = just skip it, I find the positives and they don't exist here
