- Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol (2011)
You can tell they decided they were just going to have fun with these movies now. It’s inevitable when you have to keep ramping up to go bigger and better. But I also love the sarcasm and subtle humor as well. It is more fitting to be a mindless blockbuster spy thriller. All the characters are fun and in general, there was a greater sense of fun. The stunts are great and nail-biting as they should be. This time, the threat is nukes so that is always fun. I definitely recommend watching this one. It’s just an all-around good time. - Birds of Prey (2020)
This movie had a bad case of horrible marketing. It had like 2 or 3 different names around the time of release. This was an underdog of a movie and it took a page from Deadpool’s book mixed with the previous Suicide Squad. This is probably the only DC movie I could watch over and over again and never get tired of it. It has a tight runtime, fun characters, and badass action scenes. This also allowed girl power to shine through in a fun way that wasn’t heavy-handed. Something as simple as sharing hair ties in the middle of the fight. Margot Robbie obviously steals the show in a fantastic showing of crazy, humor, and badassness. Ewan as Black Mask was a fun choice. It was the perfect balance of silly to fit the tone but he never lost that insanity edge that makes you fear him. The whole movie is amazing and deserves more recognition. Margot as Harley is a Quinntessential casting and will be hard to top. - Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015)
This movie fell a little short compared to its predecessor. There were a couple of parts where it felt a little too cheeky. Tony had moments that just didn’t feel quite right considering his past arcs. I still love the movie and how it introduced fan-favorite characters. They gave Pietro the shaft though, which sucks. He could have been a big part going forward. This is still a fun blockbuster at the end of the day. Also, hulk buster was the coolest thing when this came out. This movie ended up more of a stepping stone for phase 3. This phase tried to be the Empire Strikes Back of the universe and it was hit or miss. This is still a good movie and a must-watch for the MCU. - Meg 2: The Trench (Released 8/4/23)
The Jaws knockoff is back at it again. But this time, there are Jurassic Park vibes. From hungry human-sized dinosaurs to humans accidentally releasing the monsters into the general public. This has the same problems as the American Godzilla movies in that there is a lot of focus on the humans when really we just want nonstop monster attacks. I guess they want you to feel excited when the heroes take down the monsters, but it drags the movie. It’s one of those movies where you get what you expect. I had a good time, but there should have been fewer human villains and more shark food. - Mission Impossible 3 (2006)
This one is a million times better, mostly thanks to the villain. Nothing shows stakes like the villain casually saying he is gonna find and murder your wife just because you captured him and interfered with the plans. He came across as heartless and cold. It would be nice if Ethan would have married one of the girls from the previous movies, just so it is a bit more impactful when she gets kidnapped. This did a lot of things better and definitely went bigger with their set pieces. The first two movies were warm-ups and this was the franchise hitting the mark and finding its identity. Some things could still be improved but overall this was a great experience. - Mission Impossible 2 (2000)
This time we have a deadly virus that could be used to sell the vaccine to said virus. This is definitely a product of the time with the soundtrack and camera work (much like the first movie). The characters were a little more interesting this time around. For the most part, this is a slightly better movie than the original which is the trend you want to go in. This is a decent entry and ideally, it gets better from here. - Joker (2019)
There is no denying that this is a solid film. My biggest complaint about this movie is this could have been essentially the same movie if you changed the title and removed the Wayne family. This is especially true for the first half of the film. For some, they would see this as a pro. A great story about mental illness and society’s problems with a Joker lens. Personally, this falls on my short list of movies that I would have preferred being called something else with inspiration from its namesake. The other notable movie on said list is the 2015 Fantastic Four film. Both movies would have been better in my opinion without the weight of the IP attached to them. It’s a great film, with great imagery, and a powerful message. My only gripe really is just the Joker name being attached rather than being inspired by the character and simply being its own thing. - Guardians Of The Galaxy (2014)
James Gunn did the impossible and made characters no one outside of hardcore comic fans have even heard of a household name. Not only was it good but it made the characters compelling and it was so easy to be emotionally invested. The weakest part was the villains. They talk in such a Shakespearian way. Thanos sounded intelligent but the way he talked was so weird. Ronan fell into the issue Marvel had for a while and was a weak villain. He was just an obstacle rather than a compelling villain. Everything else about this was amazing. - TMNT: Mutant Mayhem (Released 8/2/23)
This was definitely an inspired work rather than trying to change the mold. It has the artistic uniqueness like Spider-verse. The character arcs of Out of the Shadows. There was a splash of Godzilla as well. This is definitely a solid entry but it doesn’t hit me as well as the underrated Out of the Shadows. The characters are fun and the villain is actually pretty darn good. The animation did get distracting a little at times. I definitely recommend the movie, it's just not quite at the 80s Saturday morning cartoon yet. - Haunted Mansion (Released 7/28/23)
This movie would have been better suited for a Disney+ Halloween release. This just seemed too safe and generic for a movie. It has a star studded cast but no one really shines. It honestly felt like a side quest in Hogwarts Legacy. The effects were decent but nothing groundbreaking. It's a movie that you might watch around Halloween time and forget the rest of the year. This should have been better than it was. It's just meh. - Mission Impossible (1996)
A reimagining of its namesake. Mission Impossible has spy stuff, backstabbing, and Tom Cruise making the derpiest faces possible. It definitely screams the 90s in a lot of aspects. The iconic train scene and the computer vault scene are tense and well done. It doesn’t separate itself too much from any other spy thrillers. It’s about a macguffin that in the wrong hands can take down an organization. It is a middle-of-the-road action movie but with several sequels, it will have time to grow. Check this one out simply for its two iconic scenes. - Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
Okay…I get why this movie made almost 1.5 billion dollars. It plays the nostalgia cards right. It has homages and throwbacks to the original film, but it still progresses the story forward. Yes, on paper it is the same exact film as the original. HOWEVER!!! It took what made the original a classic and made it better in every way. The finale was fantastic. They could have called it on the mission complete but the stakes needed to be higher with edge-of-your-seat action. This really did strike that perfect balance of nostalgia and proper sequel improvement. The relationships had proper tension. Maverick is a ballsy pilot. It’s everything that needed to be in a Top Gun sequel.
