  • Iron Man 2 (2010)

People thought this was one of the biggest early hiccups in MCU history after Thor: The Dark World. This movie is not bad and I think I have an idea of how they could have done it better. Keep the military wanting the armor part. Keep Tony’s bucket list YOLO stuff. When Rhodey takes the suit, have Hammer reverse engineer the arc reactor and attempt to to make his own Iron Legion. When showing the suits at the expo, he calls out for Tony to go toe to toe with him. Tony tries to do the right thing and talk it out but Hammer being embarrassed by his early suit fails attacks Tony and hell ensues. Hammer tells his software to go into remote override and every suit kicks out their driver and every suit comes at Tony who can barely hold out and then Rhodey comes and saves Tony’s butt and they defeat all the drones. Hammer deactivates Rhodey's suit that now has Hammer tech instead of Stark tech. Tony and Hammer go manno y manno. Hammer starts off hot and Tony is on his knees, Hammer pulls out the ex-wife bullet and fires at Tony but it doesn’t do crap. Tony looks at Hammer and say’s “My turn” and shoot a chest repulsor at full blast from his new reactor sending Hammer flying and the suit is immobile due to the arc reactor being destroyed. Hammer is arrested and the day is won…so long story short, get rid of Ivan and focus on Hammer and his trying to be better than Tony. While hindsight is 20/20, the only positive thing this movie did was expand the universe a bit with Fury, Coulson, and Widow. I didn't love Whiplash as the villain which is why I would have liked Hammer to be the main villain and try to overcome the embarrassment of the hearing at the beginning of the movie. Downey makes the movie we did get at least enjoyable. • Big George Foreman (released 4/28/23)

Full Disclosure, I did a stupid and went to a Spanish showing of this movie with no subtitles. But with my limited Spanish knowledge and context from the scenes, I was able to follow along okay. I was shocked at how by the numbers the movie is. I was alone in the theatre so I followed the Wikipedia page on his life as the movie progressed. It played out more like a memoir by Foreman rather than a Hollywood dramatization of his life. It was like watching small clips in his life that would probably stick out if you remembered them from your own. The acting was great. The boxing was weird because it felt too realistic and sluggish. The Rocky/Creed movies made boxing seem exciting and energized. You don’t really feel the hits or urgency as much in this movie. The trailer for the movie basically gives you the movie outline but without some of the character moments. It’s an okay biopic. This is definitely more for Foreman fans or people that just wanna learn about his life. • Love Again (released 5/5/23)

Um...So this movie plays out exactly how you expect. The whole premise is this woman loses her soulmate. Two years later she decides to send a text to his number but that number is now the work phone of another guy. The guy loves the beauty of the text and starts pursuing her. This goes exactly how you expect. He has the cheat codes to her heart. Based on what I've said so far, you know how the drama unfolds. Nick Jonas' wife is the lead so the fact he got to play a jerk date early on in the movie was kinda funny. Celine Dion is in this periodically and acts as an emotional mentor. It's not a horrible movie, but can definitely wait for a streaming movie night once it is available. • Sisu (Released 4/28/23)

I had an extra movie on my A-list left so I was between this and The Black Demon. Essentially, Rambo or Jaws. I went with the Rambo option, and boy was it a good choice. The premise is this Rambo/John Wick type is trying to make a living as a gold digger in Nazi-invaded Sweden. He is an old, rugged man just trying to make an honest living and some Nazis get in his way. Just like the heroes I compared him to, he is a former military with a spooky name, who refuses to die. The action is incredible and the sheer determination he has to not die is incredible. I don’t think he realistically could have survived a few things but that is how he got the nickname Sisu. If you are in the mood for a violent action movie with a mostly silent protagonist, this movie is worth the watch. • Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (released 5/5/23)

Before I get into the review, I want to talk about the wild journey this series went through. Back when the first movie came out, every speculator said the movie was going to be Marvel’s big flop. Taking a no-name group of characters and putting them in the Marvel fold would be a disaster. A dent in the already rocky cog of the Marvel Machine after Iron Man 3’s divisive twist and Thor The Dark World’s forgettable villain and story. James Gunn came in and made a movie that made a talking raccoon a household name. He managed to keep the momentum by releasing the sequel three years later. Adding more family drama and heartbreak. Then, as James was gearing up for the third movie, he was fired for inappropriate tweets nearly a decade prior. He hopped over to DC and made The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker, both of which were phenomenal Gunn-infused action comedies with heart. Marvel rehired him to finish the story only he could tell. He came back to do one last film…Vol. 3. This is a movie I think most people will walk away having enjoyed but having small gripes. Rocket’s backstory is heavily explored and is the focal point of the film. Everyone gets their little character moments but this is Rocket’s story. It is very emotionally driven and everyone has their demons they need to face. Gamora is somehow more of a jerk than when introduced in the first movie. Also, it will help to watch the Christmas Special to understand a certain relationship in the group. The High Evolutionary is an insane person who acts like a god because he feels there needs to be one since God doesn’t exist to him. I feel Adam Warlock was used in a way die-hard comic fans may scratch their head at. He was more along for the ride anyway. This is very much the space adventure you expect and never lets off the gas except to add some levity after an intense scene. If you are a Guardians fan, go see this movie. Story - 18% Characters - 18% Pacing - 19% Spectacle - 18% Entertainment - 19% Total score: 92% Grade scale: 90%-100% = must watch 80%-89% = solid, but could be better 70%-79% = Not terrible, watch if the characters or story interests you 60%-69% = only watch for completionist reasons 0%-59% = just skip it, I find the positives and they don't exist here

  • The Fast and The Furious: Tokyo Drift (2006)

I see why this movie is the runt of the litter. It keeps the spirit of cars and babes. However, it leaned too much into the drifting (See what I did there?). I get the movie is called Tokyo Drift but no one can drive in a straight line for more than 2 seconds. The whole movie felt like the usual underdog story. The main character fails at the beginning, learns a new thing about his craft, has a training montage, and has a showdown that mirrors the failure at the beginning. The only likable and fun character was Han. Everyone else just felt very blah. Like the previous movies, it does a good job of not feeling bogged down. There are also several great shots in the movie. One of the shots in the finale made my stomach twirl for a second. It feels out of place in regard to the Fast and Furious movies so far. The only connection was a cameo in the closing scene. The movie played it safe which made it a meh experience overall. Story - 14% Characters - 14% Pacing - 18% Spectacle - 18% Entertainment - 16% Total score: 80% Grade scale: 90%-100% = must watch 80%-89% = solid, but could be better 70%-79% = Not terrible, watch if the characters or story interests you 60%-69% = only watch for completionist reasons 0%-59% = just skip it, I find the positives and they don't exist here

  • May the Fourth...A Star Wars Ramble 2023

Today is May 4th, also known as, Star Wars Day. I don't have any reviews for Star Wars coming anytime soon. I would love to sit and watch all the movies and even binge the shows. Star Wars has been a part of my life for a long time. I watched The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones in passing at sleepovers but my love of Star Wars began when Revenge of the Sith came out in 2005. For 18 years of my life, I have been enveloped by the magic of Star Wars. When The Force Awakens came out, I saw it 3 times on the opening day and I believe 6 times total (maybe 7). I have lightsabers and I've played several of the games from Battlefront to The Force Unleashed. At my first Comic Con, I met Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca) and it was a surreal experience. He was so kind and his hand ate my hand which was insane. Back when there were only 6 movies, I had marathons once every few months. I was definitely a nerdy indoor kid growing up because all I did was binge Star Wars and Lord of the Rings. I'm just cool like that I suppose. I say all this as a way to commemorate an important franchise in my life. I know to most people I'm the MCU nerd, but I'm really just a pop culture nerd. That is why I'm taking this journey of watching movies and reviewing them. Some movies I've seen dozens of times and some are my first time. The magic of movies is the stories and the characters. You are taken somewhere you have never been and experience things through a new lens. As cheesy as the AMC preroll is, it sums up the magic of the theatre and movies as a whole. Star Wars has been a part of pop culture for nearly 46 years. So many directors and writers and actors credit the original trilogy as their inspiration to be in the movie industry. Without George Lucas creating Star Wars, the Hollywood landscape would be very different. Star Wars projects have left some fans divided, but a true fan loves the films for being something larger than life. It is a universe that deserves to be explored and treated as a proper playground. As long as you have good vs evil with a lightsaber thrown in, you can't do worse than meh (despite what the crybabies say). I hope you use today to watch or play something Star Wars. May The Force Be With You...Always.

  • 2 Fast 2 Furious (2003)

Plotwise, this is a much better movie than the first. The dialogue however took a drastic step down. I don’t know if it was the writing, the director, or the actors but it felt like it was trying too hard to be bro dialogue. They definitely went bigger with this one with bigger set pieces and cooler driving tricks. This one relied less on racing and more on driving on the run. It also felt a bit disconnected from the first movie. You could skip the first movie and have assumed this was the first one. This was a good blockbuster-y Saturday morning cartoon kind of action movie. It’s high-octane fun and worth a watch if you want fun action or you are a dudebro who loves cars and chicks. • Superman Returns (2006)

This movie was meant to be a sideways continuation of the first 2 Christopher Reeve movies. I think this movie did a lot of good to pay homage to those movies. It modernized without taking away its spirit. It even continued the trend of things happening in a Superman movie that make no gosh darn sense. Brandon Routh did an amazing job and I would have loved to see him in sequels and explore the ramifications of having a super lad. It was a bit unnecessarily long but I never got bored. I’m glad Brandon got to don a Superman suit in the Arrowverse. This movie had issues, but I still hold this one close to my heart. • X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009)

This is a good blockbuster but some of the story felt weird. The thing that killed this movie was Deadpool. If you wanted a Weapon XI character as the final boss…fine! But don’t do Deadpool dirty like that. You pulled a Galactus and made it have semblance to the comic character but F**K. That was an abomination and should not have had a deadpool twist. I liked the rest though. Just screw Deadpool in this movie and your BS teaser that he is alive. Logan is great though. His brother is interesting and fleshed out while raising some continuity issues. It had potential thanks to Jackman giving it his all as usual. It just needed to build up to something better. Story - 14% Characters - 13% Pacing - 15% Spectacle - 16% Entertainment - 15% Total score: 73% Grade scale: 90%-100% = must watch 80%-89% = solid, but could be better 70%-79% = Not terrible, watch if the characters or story interests you 60%-69% = only watch for completionist reasons 0%-59% = just skip it, I find the positives and they don't exist here

  • Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret. (released 4/28/23)

This was an odd coming-of-age story about a 6th-grade girl trying to figure life out in her new town. There are two main growing pains that the movie focuses on. The first is womanhood. Margaret is desperate to have her first period and as the group mantra goes "We must, we must, we must increase our bust." The other big focus is her trying to figure out religion. Her Jewish dad and Christian mom never pushed religion because it was the reason her grandparents disowned her mom. She samples religion and feels so lost. Nothing felt right to her and she starts to feel like religion is a waste. This movie is quite awkward for a gentleman like me to watch alone for the sake of a review. This is very much a mother-daughter movie date kind of film. It had many funny moments, and I enjoyed the themes throughout the movie. I am curious enough to read the book and see how it compares. You can decide for yourself based on the plot and themes if this movie is for you. This has a specific audience that can be appreciated by anyone but loved more by those who have experienced teenage girl life. • Polite Society (released 4/28/23)

I didn't fully know what to expect from this movie. The cast and the tone from the trailers are what caught my attention. This is honestly a great movie about your dreams and the connection of family. There is a twist in the movie that I thought was perfectly weird and funny. The cast is amazing. It felt like a hyper-real version of genuine life and family drama. I say hyper-real because the fighting is more like an anime than realistic fighting. I love everything about this movie. It is also cool to see Pakistani-centric films being made (like Ms. Marvel). It feels like a movie you would try on a whim on Netflix and then be pleasantly surprised by how fun the film is. This movie is a fun ride and I recommend it highly for a good laugh with some scenes that will trigger secondhand awkwardness. Story - 18% Characters - 19% Pacing - 17% Spectacle - 20% Entertainment - 18% Total score: 92% Grade scale: 90%-100% = must watch 80%-89% = solid, but could be better 70%-79% = Not terrible, watch if the characters or story interests you 60%-69% = only watch for completionist reasons 0%-59% = just skip it, I find the positives and they don't exist here
