- Steel (1997)
This movie actually surprised me. Shaq can’t act for shit and the whole movie is one big cliche story and dialogue-wise is generic as heck. Other than that it was a super fun movie. It was action-packed and over-the-top moments that hit just right. Honestly, give this bad boy a try if you’ve never seen it. - Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007)
This movie wasn’t bad…at all. The problem with this movie was it felt rushed. The run time was an hour and a half and with my watching, I’ve learned superhero movies suffer if they are too short. I’m not asking for Zack Snyder Justice League length. The story at least feels fleshed out at around the 2-hour mark. Also, silhouettes don't count!! Give us Galactus, not a huge cloud!!! It felt about on par with the first movie, but this movie left so much to be desired. The stakes were bigger, but it didn't have as much of a wow factor as it should have. It's worth watching if you want to do a double feature with the first one. This as a standalone experience could have been better. - Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves (released 3/31/23)
This might be just me, but this movie felt like it did to Dungeons and Dragons what Free Guy did for video games. It was broad enough with a fun story to intrigue the average moviegoer while having enough references to appease the hardcore fans. The trailers capture the vibe of the film perfectly. There is lots of fun and witty humor. There are adventures and majestic locations that remind me of the Lord of the Rings films. It genuinely felt like a hybrid of Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings, and an 80s/90s fantasy comedy. It's a fun time with unique characters. The effects did need a bit more polishing but it gave the movie a bit more character and weirdly, a more nostalgic feel. Take the family to go see this one. You will not be disappointed. - John Wick (2014)
What do you get when you cross Chuck Norris and the Winter Soldier? You get John Wick. The genius of the movie is they set up the emotional drive for John. It’s a simple revenge story but introduces a world John has been in for decades. There is a perfect balance of action with sprinkles of levity to bring your heart rate down a bit. Every character feels like an important piece. There isn’t a big waste on gun fodder, but there is plenty of focus on those close to John. There are even moments that show how serious and respectable this assassination organization is in this world. But can we please get some Fs in the chat for the doggo? He was a happy good boy and Theon decided to kill it. It is a star-studded cast and a great start to an action franchise. It felt slow at some points but overall was a wild ride. Plus, seeing all the training Keanu did for the film pay off was such a spectacle to watch. Just sucks he gets stormtrooper aim when it comes to a big central character. This whole thing keeps it simple and shows a killing machine doing his thing. I highly recommend it if you are a fan of action movies. - Scream (2022)
Time for the requel. While there are several elements that make this movie a sequel, it is setting up a new cast going forward. It also does what Hollywood has been leaning on as of late and that is nostalgia. There is a heavy emphasis on the legacy characters returning and they even returned to the house where it all started. It feels like a natural progression with the times. Still annoying that people with guns always try to shoot from point blank because they have horrible aim from more than 10 feet away. It does at least feel like a fresh retelling of the franchise. The new cast is fantastic, but the dude from 13 Reasons Why was lowkey a distraction…and not just because of the blond streaks. The rest of the cast is the slightly smarter side of Gen Z. It was also brave of the movie to kill a couple of legacy characters. I won’t say who because of spoilers but no one is safe. The pacing in the newer Scream movies is so much better. This is a fun time, but if you know the rules and how these movies play out, then you’ll see the reveals coming. There were even a couple of foreshadowing moments that were pretty clever. The franchise seems like it wants to use this film as a launching point for more sequels. So this would be a good point to hop on if you want to skip the 90s-ness. - Batman and Robin (1997)
The cheesiness of this movie is fun…for about 20 minutes. It couldn’t decide if it wanted to be serious or go all in on “jumping the shark” This movie had poor writing and an identity crisis. It has decent moments but they were too spread out and the film dragged terribly. This should have been trimmed down a lot more. I loved this movie as a kid, but as an adult, the quirkiness is too much to love the movie. At least Arnold looked like he was having fun. This movie killed DC movies for about a decade. So give it a watch to see why. - Spider-man 3 (2007)
Sony has a bad habit of trying to go too big too fast. I think if Sam Raimi made the film he wanted, then this could have been a beautiful ending and maybe even kept the story going. Behind-the-scenes decisions were made to use big characters rather than make a good story. Everyone loves venom but you can’t force characters in just because you think it’ll mean $$$. There are redeeming parts to the movie. This was just dragged down in the creative fight. The black suit spidey is still one of my favorite looks of all time. I can only recommend watching this if you are doing a marathon of Raimi's movies. Both for context and to complete the story. - Inside (released 3/17/23)
This movie 100% could have been an alternate universe Green Goblin origin story. Willem Defoe plays an art thief trying to steal some expensive art from a penthouse in New York City. The alarm system becomes faulty and seals him inside (roll credits). He desperately tries to find food and water in a house that for the most part was a glorified storage unit with a bed and kitchen for a weekend visit. He has to scavenge food and water, and survive a broken A/C unit that alternates blistering heat and bone-chilling cold. On top of surviving, he has to find his way out. It's a barebones story meant to showcase Willem Defoe playing a caged animal that is slowly losing his mind. There were a few gross-out scenes from his desperation for food and water. Despite being only 1 hour and 40 minutes, this movie felt double that. You are constantly at the edge of your seat for him to get out, only to slump back in your seat when it seems like a lost cause once again. The movie itself is fine, but it is an isolation movie at its core. While they are brilliant in concept, they can ultimately be boring in practice. Luckily, Willem brings his unique charm to the role which helped. - John Wick Chapter 4 (released 3/24/23)
John Wick is back to kick names and take ass...wait... So this is the fourth film in the John Wick franchise. Everything is coming to a spearhead and John just wants the hell out. Bigger locations and bigger body counts were expected going in. The story is essentially John trying to figure out who he needs to kill to let him live his days out in peace. The plot at first was meh because it was just action or set up for everything else. The final act makes everything come full circle and actually bowties this as the final entry for John. Will he get his freedom or die trying? I can't tell you that, that would spoil the fun and the stakes. All the characters are engaging as always, and they even introduced a character that could potentially be the new morally grey assassin we can follow if they continue the franchise. The pacing was a bit more of an issue in this movie. Ironically the thing that hindered the pacing was the action sequences that just never seemed to end. I know this is an action movie, but it felt like some of the set pieces went on for 15 minutes. There are only so many weapon variations you can use to keep the scenes fresh. The spectacle factor was here as always. There was even a homage to old-school top-down shooter video games in one of the sequences. However, John had a case of Blackwidowitis. He should have died from at least 3 or 4 falls that he took throughout the film. Overall, it is a solid entry into the franchise and there is plenty of material coming out to continue this well-built world. - Scream 4 (2011)
Now it’s time for the reboot rules. A lot of it is meant to be back to basics, but with more body count. I guess this is a reboot and not a remake because it has elements of a sequel while trying to start over for a new generation. It’s crazy there is an emphasis on being a viral internet star to become famous and this was over a decade ago. 2011 was prime Smosh, Shane Dawson, Epic Rap Battles, and so many more internet stars. I miss those days. Anyways, so ya, this movie is lowkey my favorite overall at this point. The first Scream is a classic, but this had better pacing and a more surprising twist for the killers. The downfall of this movie is the characterizations of the new people are played out and the legacy characters didn’t change or grow much. Emma Roberts was a fun addition to the cast and it’s always nice to see the original gang come back. I really liked this one, I would genuinely recommend it. - Scream 3 (2000)
The third in a trilogy. No one is safe and all bets are off. This film picks up three years later which begs the question…why did the killer wait this long? The timing and motivations just felt dumb and convoluted. It did its best to come full circle and it did succeed in some regards. The whole idea of explaining how things will play out per the rules starts to get stale at this point. Apparently, behind the scenes, this movie was a mess to make, from scripts turned in the day of to reshooting the end a month before release. This could definitely have been worse, but also could have been the chance to be something great. - Batman Forever (1995)
This Batman movie was similar in quality to its predecessors. Val Kilmer played the part dry which works in his favor as Bruce, but his Batman is bland. The bat suit got some nice upgrades in this one as well. My issue with this movie is the villains were teetering too close to the Adam West-era villains rather than the Tim Burton. They were too Saturday morning cartoon, which doesn’t work in this more serious world. Robin is also obnoxiously whiny. I know it’s worse in the next movie but I just wanna say it now. This movie was ok but not as necessary of a watch as the first movie in this kinda quadrilogy.
