- Punisher (2004)
Going into this I had never seen the Punisher movies. This first one was actually fairly solid. He looked the part of a military dad who just wanted to be a family man. Then dummies kill his family and he goes John Wick on their asses. I enjoyed the movie for what it was. It was nothing spectacular, but it had some decent action. - 80 for Brady (Released 2/3/23)
The Golden Girls are trying to get to the Super Bowl to see Tom Brady before he retires and/or they kick the bucket. This movie has amazing talent and is simply a feel-good comedy. The funny thing about seeing various types of movies is you get to see who the primary demographic is for that film. In the case of this movie, 80% of the audience that had hair in the silver to white range. This movie was a fun ride of old lady hijinks. There were even a few moments that can bring a tear to your eye. The trailer shows most of the movie, but it leaves out a lot of the character beats that were at the heart of the movie. Obviously, it is about a group of ladies going for a big late-life adventure. Still, there is a lot more to the heart of the movie that isn't shown. Plus, they saved a few cool cameos for the theatre. This movie is precious and an all-around fun time. - Knock At The Cabin (Released 2/3/23)
Knock at the Cabin is the newest movie from M. Night Shama... Shamala... The guy who ruined The Last Airbender movie!! I will say this movie was an interesting watch. Throughout the whole movie, you are trying to figure out if the "bad guys" are cray cray or genuinely trying to prevent the apocalypse. Some things the group does makes you think they genuinely don't want to do this and are genuine in their mission. Other things they say will make you think "wait a second, this doesn't line up right". It's a back-and-forth the whole time. You feel bad for both sides of the situation. The real question is, are you a cult regardless of whether what you say is true or not? They definitely have culty vibes regardless. The characters are well done, and the story is fun to try and figure out the truth. It did feel like a long movie despite only being about an hour and 40 minutes long. I definitely recommend the movie if you want to go see a thriller. Otherwise, it won't hurt to wait until it is on a streaming platform or at your nearby Redbox. - Shotgun Wedding (Prime Video 2023)
Shotgun Wedding, in a nutshell, is Die Hard with a bride and groom at a destination wedding. I know that is an odd comparison but it's essentially terrorists who kidnap everyone except our heroes. The heroes must save the group. There are reveals of the true intentions of the villain. The whole shebang. The movie is predictable but it had genuinely funny moments. It’s easy for a cop or former military guy to be in the hero role. Having two average people take down pirates is just flat-out hectic fun. It’s stupid. It’s fun. It is one hundred percent worth the watch. Perfect for an hour and 40-minute action-comedy. - House Party 5: Tonight's the Night (2013)
My complaints about this movie are similar to my complaints about the 4th movie. The whole thing is offensive and dumb. As I was watching, I realized it was made like a hybrid between a YouTuber-made film with the awful humor of those parody movies from the late 2000s. House Party as a franchise at this point was cashing in on the name and basic premise, but without the genuineness of the characters. The first 3 movies, while not perfect, were bearable to watch and grew on you as you watched them. These direct-to-video movies were lazy. I will say, the toilet gag was pretty funny in this one. While not as bad as the 4th movie, this one is still a poor imitation of the original. - Superman 3 (1983)
I’m gonna be real, I did not like this movie. They leaned too hard into the slapstick humor. The new “villains” are terrible. I did like the inclusion of Lana Lang to change up the Lois Lane love angle. This movie overall just made no sense. There were questionable decisions all around. The whole evil superman thing didn’t work the way it should have. This should have been the Superman equivalent of the symbiote suit spidey and not a drunk Tony Stark. This movie had very little in terms of likeability. Superman is supposed to be light-hearted but this was just cringe slapstick. Superman is a god. He had to defeat 3 people equally as powerful as him in the last movie. This was a huge downgrade. - The Hulk (2003)
This movie seemed to have 2 goals: to take the comic book look literally and to make this a character drama piece. It worked in some areas and failed in others. I don’t hate this movie by any means, but it definitely could have made improvements, especially with the final villain. If you want to see Hulk smash things, this movie will scratch that itch. - Fear (Released 1/27/23)
What is your greatest fear? That is a question you genuinely start asking yourself while watching the movie. I don't have any irrational fears soooo I was struggling to figure out what my fear would be. The movie is fine for the first two acts. When the bodies start hitting the floor in the third act is when the movie takes off. Also, why does every horror movie I've seen lately have a spinning/upside-down shot in the first five minutes? It's just an observation I've noticed. The characters have basic traits to try and make them seem like individuals but it is still not enough. There are some cool visuals for the fear hallucinations. The best way I can describe this movie is a weird mix of Evil Dead and Final Destination meets covid/The Happening. In general, this movie doesn't stand out, but it's a fun enough time. Maybe check it out one night when it is streaming or available at your nearest Redbox. I also can't see an old witchy lady in a horror production without thinking "The Hag of Hackett's Quarry!!". The Quarry is a great video game by the way. Anyways! This is an ok movie that should be rented/streamed. - Infinity Pool (Released 1/27/23)
I usually don't condone drugs, but if you or someone you know participates in hallucinogenic substances, this is the movie for you/them. This movie had less of a plot and more of a conglomeration of weird scenes. It has orgies and clones and stabbing....not necessarily in that order. Everyone is batshit crazy. The whole movie is a weird, indie, oddball film. I don't even know whether to suggest it or not. This falls under the movies you should see, but maybe only watch it once. Also, watch it alone while you are at it. It has scenes that make being with others a bit uncomfortable. It actually originally had an NC-17 rating. You will feel more uncomfortable than scared throughout the movie. It's just weird. That's all I can really say. - House Party 4: Down to the Last Minute (2001)
The fact this was a direct-to-video rather than a theatrical release is obvious. The plot was something a 12-year-old would write. It would not fly today because of how unapologetically offensive it is. The characters are over-the-top blahness. The B plot was more ridiculous than the main plot. It has the shortest runtime in the franchise but I wanted to turn it off eight minutes in. There were a few funny moments, but this plays more like a crappy TV pilot for a comedy. Avoid this movie at all costs. Story - 11% Characters - 10% Pacing - 18% Spectacle - 10% Entertainment - 10% Total score: 49% Grade scale: 90%-100% = must watch 80%-89% = solid, but could be better 70%-79% = Not terrible, watch if the characters or story interests you 60%-69% = only watch for completionist reasons 0%-59% = just skip it, I find the positives and they don't exist here
- House Party 3 (1994)
This movie pushed the characters farther into their lives. Each movie was like a piece of their lives that everyone experiences the biggest change: High School, College, Adulthood/marriage. There were some funny moments, but it just wasn’t as solid as the second movie. The kids were honestly kind of obnoxious. All I can really say is the narrative is pushed further, but it is starting to get stale in concept by this point. It’s by no means a bad movie, just a step in the wrong direction. Story - 15% Characters - 16% Pacing - 15% Spectacle - 14% Entertainment - 15% Total score: 75% Grade scale: 90%-100% = must watch 80%-89% = solid, but could be better 70%-79% = Not terrible, watch if the characters or story interests you 60%-69% = only watch for completionist reasons 0%-59% = just skip it, I find the positives and they don't exist here
- Swamp Thing (1982)
This movie was written and directed by Wes Craven, most people know him for Nightmare on Elm Street and Scream. That being said, I expected it to be a little more on the horror side rather than soldiers hunting down a monster. The movie as a whole was a fun enough watch and felt very 80s action throughout. The prosthetics were campy and don’t age well but practical effects at least have a tangibility to them. This is not a must-watch, but if you like campy 80s monster action, then give it a watch. There exist 2 versions of this movie: The US version and the international version. The main difference apparently is nudity. Doesn’t do much for the story but it allowed the US version to get a PG rating while international viewers got to see a few nude scenes. The more you know!
