  • Shazam! (2019)

I know it’s kinda crazy for a movie like this to score so high, but this is an underrated gem. This showed you can have a lighthearted coming-of-age movie in the grittier world of the DCEU. Zachary Levi is a fun actor and the cast around him is amazing. The villain is a bit one-dimensional, but that is the curse of Mark Strong. Getting to see Billy grow into a hero while also growing closer to his family is beautiful. It was sad to have somewhat of a Superman cameo that could never amount to anything. There is heart and family. There is not much more you could ask for in a fun superhero movie. • X-Men: Days of Future's Past (2014)

This movie did a solid job of setting the stakes and making an interesting “Time Travel” movie. It was exciting and kept me worried for the future. I also watched the Rogue cut version which mostly creates a plot thread to get Rogue to take Kitty’s place. It’s definitely worth it. This movie is awesome and arguably the best-made X-men movie. Ignoring the timey whimey issues of course. This movie is awesome and deserves a high rating. • Oppenheimer (released 7/21/23)

Christopher Nolan is back with a biopic about the father of the atomic bomb, Robert Oppenheimer. The film is well made as to be expected. It jumped around a lot between the linear story and the investigation into possible communist ties afterward. I did feel like the scene-to-scene movement was a little too fast and hectic at times. This was a fine biopic, but was three hours necessary? I just wanted to see the build-up to the atomic bomb being made and the detonation. End with the literal and emotional fallout of it all. The successful test and broadcasts of the Hiroshima/Nagasaki droppings happen at the 2-hour mark. It leaned heavier into the investigation after that which is fine but just seemed like a lot. I had a good time, but like most Nolan films I likely won’t revisit this for a long time. Gotta be in the right mood, ya know? • Secret Invasion (2023)

The show’s premise and first episode initially had me invested. The show quickly deteriorated and just felt lost. Secret Invasion is at the very least a Captain America: Civil War-sized movie. But what they gave us was a drama with a little action to bring your attention back in. The acting is so phenomenal but the material they were working with is so bland. I remember one YouTuber mentioning this feels like Captain Marvel 2 without Captain Marvel and that is pretty accurate. The effects are hit or miss, especially in the obligatory super fight in the last episode. This had all the potential in the world, but this will end up like Moon Knight for me. I will probably only watch it again the next time I do a Super MCU marathon. It just felt out of place and didn’t hit right. • Top Gun (1986)

This falls under movies I’ve never seen but probably should have. My brother always wanted to punch Tom Cruise in the face so maybe that is why this was never pushed on me. I’ve known it from the pop culture side of things but this is my first time watching it. It was a better movie than I expected. There was only so much they could do cinematically but they did a solid job. The characters each have their own quirks and despite butting heads, there is a sense of respect…mostly. The love interest situation wasn’t forced but definitely the cliche “the girl you flirted with is your superior”. I see why this movie is a classic and 70% of that is the soundtrack. This is a classic for a reason and deserves at least one watch in your lifetime. It’s not the best movie of all time but definitely feels unique and original. • Insidious: The Last Key (2018)

The franchise is becoming a bit stale by this 4th entry. I was having trouble staying invested in this one. Chapter 3 already did the Further stuff with new people and did a bit of an origin already. This one felt unnecessary and just felt like the studio was keeping on while not making it obvious it was about the money. I personally would rather Blumhouse make a third Happy Death Day. Horror needs to be fun. Having Insidious and Conjuring running simultaneously feels a bit like double dipping. This one isn’t worth your time unless you just want to watch the whole franchise on an afternoon binge. Story - 15% Characters - 15% Pacing - 15% Spectacle - 17% Entertainment - 15% Total score: 77% Grade scale: 90%-100% = must watch 80%-89% = solid, but could be better 70%-79% = Not terrible, watch if the characters or story interests you 60%-69% = only watch for completionist reasons 0%-59% = just skip it, I find the positives and they don't exist here

  • Aquaman (2018)

I never really loved this movie. The plot is decent, but Aquaman is already a hard sell. Jason Mamoa is rad but he is similar to The Rock in that he can play funny and badass only. Amber Heard honestly kinda sucks on her part. The visual effects also bugged me the whole movie. Sometimes there were shots that were gorgeous. Other times it was like watching a Playstation 3 cutscene. There were even a couple of scenes I noticed the blue hue of the blue screen. It’s not a terrible movie by any means, but it just really isn’t for me. This could definitely be a favorite for some people out there. • The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014)

This movie had…problems. The biggest thing is motivation. They seemed forced, especially with Electro and Goblin. The thing that I really loved about this movie was the cinematography and sound design/score. I combine those because a lot of Electro’s stuff had a dubstep element and you can even hear inner thought rapping during the Times Square scene when it focuses on Electro. The web-swinging shots are fantastic. The movie was made with such care. The story just held it back. I would have loved for Sony to finish the trilogy, but they did the usual leap to sinister six with minimal effort. Sinister Six doesn’t work as a build-up. It works when it’s part of the story like No Way Home or the Sony Spider-man game. This movie could have been better but at least it lead us to Spidey in the MCU. There is chatter of giving Tobey and Andrew more movies and I’ll be there…even if the reviews say it's garbage. Andrew was my generation's Spider-man. I feel whichever Spidey came out around your high school days is your Spidey. This movie is still beautiful. Just needed story work. Story - 14% Characters - 12% Pacing - 15% Spectacle - 18% Entertainment - 17% Total score: 76% Grade scale: 90%-100% = must watch 80%-89% = solid, but could be better 70%-79% = Not terrible, watch if the characters or story interests you 60%-69% = only watch for completionist reasons 0%-59% = just skip it, I find the positives and they don't exist here

  • Barbie (released 7/21/23)

This thing was meta as hell. It felt like a weird hybrid of the type of story that Free Guy and The Lego Movie told. The whole point of the movie wasn’t to show that guys or girls should lead. It shows that we need to be individuals and not stress to conform to the double standards both genders can experience. It is definitely an oddball movie but it helped make everything pop. It told the story it needed to tell in the most Barbie way possible. There is so much attention to detail, particularly in Barbie land. It was as if all the Kens and Barbies…and Alan were genuine dolls that were being played with. Even some of the dialogue seemed like something a little girl would say as she played with them. Behind the pink and the quirkiness, there was a genuine message that is constantly needing a refresh in our lives. This movie did so many things right and deserves all the love. Story - 18% Characters - 20% Pacing - 19% Spectacle - 20% Entertainment - 18% Total score: 95% Grade scale: 90%-100% = must watch 80%-89% = solid, but could be better 70%-79% = Not terrible, watch if the characters or story interests you 60%-69% = only watch for completionist reasons 0%-59% = just skip it, I find the positives and they don't exist here

  • Insidious: Chapter 3 (2015)

This is an origin of sorts for the ghost hunters and their head ghost whisperer. They are definitely the strongest part of the movie. The dad is the biggest crybaby. He does care about the kids but he is acting like a stressed-out 25-year-old. The love interest for the main girl literally becomes a useless thread halfway through the movie. As a whole, the story is definitely more interesting than the previous films but done with less grace than the first 2. It's an alright film, but only worth the watch if you want to see the origin of the ghost-hunting crew from the first 2 films. Story - 17% Characters - 15% Pacing - 15% Spectacle - 17% Entertainment - 16% Total score: 80% Grade scale: 90%-100% = must watch 80%-89% = solid, but could be better 70%-79% = Not terrible, watch if the characters or story interests you 60%-69% = only watch for completionist reasons 0%-59% = just skip it, I find the positives and they don't exist here

  • Insidious: Chapter 2 (2013)

So we have introduced pseudo-time travel. At least it’s used in a way that makes everything come full circle. This also feels a bit like The Shining at the climax of the film. It does a good job of proper atmosphere and really growing the lore of it all. It was also interesting to see the dad and son swap places. The movie is very similar to the first. This one is a bit more intense but still focuses a lot on atmosphere and lore. After the previous movie left on a cliffhanger, you may as well watch this one, too. Story - 18% Characters - 16% Pacing - 16% Spectacle - 18% Entertainment - 17% Total score: 85% Grade scale: 90%-100% = must watch 80%-89% = solid, but could be better 70%-79% = Not terrible, watch if the characters or story interests you 60%-69% = only watch for completionist reasons 0%-59% = just skip it, I find the positives and they don't exist here

  • Justice "Josstice" League (2017)

This movie is the prime example of why Marvel’s formula of solo characters, then a team-up works so well. If you don’t follow that formula, you are stuck with 2 options: spend a lot of runtime on your new characters or have 2-dimensional characters. Aquaman and Cyborg were very flat versions of their characters. Barry was at least endearing and felt like a kid/the audience going through the experience. They nerfed the hell out of Batman. He is a man going up against gods and he is used like a human rather than a smart man with the tools to go toe to toe with these gods. Cheap nostalgia for Superman by using the OG theme twice but never really using the Man of Steel theme. Wonder Woman was there to look pretty and throw a few punches. The worst crime of all was it tried way too damn hard to be the Avengers. Yes, you need the money shots and set pieces. However, this whole thing was Elmer’s glue attempt to make a generic team-up movie. It moved too far away from the style that made up the DCEU up to that point. DC had the darker tones literally and metaphorically to separate themselves, which gave it a more raw feel. This is not a horrible movie on its own merits, but surrounded by its DCEU counterparts, it just feels off. You can have humor but don’t do it at the expense of your characters. Zack Snyder’s version obviously had the benefit of removing everything wrong with this movie and adding his own style to it. This was a studio cash cow desperation attempt and they tarnished a brand that was still technically young. You can have hiccups when you are growing, but you can’t 180 to play catch up to someone else that was already ⅔ through their first marathon. All that to say, it’s not a bad movie. It’s just a bad DCEU movie. Story - 14% Characters - 16% Pacing - 16% Spectacle - 17% Entertainment - 15% Total score: 78% Grade scale: 90%-100% = must watch 80%-89% = solid, but could be better 70%-79% = Not terrible, watch if the characters or story interests you 60%-69% = only watch for completionist reasons 0%-59% = just skip it, I find the positives and they don't exist here
